AVIS DE DÉCÈS
Mackenzie Podo died doing one of the things she loved most — riding her motorcycle. Her life was tragically cut short on June 8, 2019 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham. She was surrounded by those who loved her, and whom she loved.
Mackenzie — often known simply as Mack or Kenzie — grew up in Duluth and earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Georgia. She lived fearlessly, adventurously, and independently, never settling for anything short of exciting.
When she wasn’t riding motorcycles, she was captivated by nature. Some of her favorite trips included long hikes through the otherworldly landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. On the days she wasn’t able to venture outdoors, she would bury her nose in a book, play her guitar or piano, or tackle an ambitious baking project.
While many cherished her quirky sense of humor and fierce individuality, those who were truly lucky witnessed the extent of her love and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, we think she would have appreciated contributions to these causes. Please make donations in celebration of Mackenzie Podo, 3830 Bridlewood Drive, Duluth, Georgia 30096.

I went ice-skating with Mack in high school with our mutual friend Jessica. Afterwards, we went to Mack's house and just sat there in her bedroom and watched her play skyrim for an hour before she put on Monty Python to entertain us. LOL. I remember looking around at her room at all her shiny game consoles and asking her, "Mack.. are you rich?"
Another time I took her to my church, and there was a boy there playing the guitar that I admired. Wanting to talk about him, I said to her, "Isn't he cool?" She said, "Not really. My brother could do that. I could do that." This memory always makes me laugh.
I would always ask her how she could read her own handwriting, with it being so very tiny. Lunchtime at school would find her singing kpop with Michelle. They made me watch Boys over Flowers and we all cried over poor JiHoo together. (I still be reppin team Goo Jun Pyo tho). And I was convinced the only man you'd ever love was Noctis from FFXV!
I really wish we could have been better friends following high school, Mack. I always thought you were hilarious and cool. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to talk to you just a few days before the bad news. I was happy to hear the stories at your service of just how much people loved and continue to love you.
Rest peacefully. Yours is a name I'll never forget.

I was lucky enough to have Mack in my 4th and 5th grade class. She was a beautiful, smart, talented, witty, and a caring young lady. I remember when I began calling her Mack thinking she might not like the nickname I called her. However, she liked it and she became Mack to the entire class, I will always remember my precious Mack in my classroom with that sweet smile. I love you Mack:)

Mackenzie was a student in my class last fall. She was quiet, but when she spoke up in class, she had something meaningful to say. She also had a wicked sense of humor and she would utter a zinger now and then and crack me up. She was an excellent student. Mackenzie's loss is felt deeply here at UGA; she had many friends and myself and other instructors who knew her are grieving. I am heartbroken. My sincerest sympathies to her family.

I worked as partners with Mackenzie during our Maymester class, and a class in the fall. We presented two projects together. I just have to say she was an amazing writer and a diligent worker. We created the first Latina superhero in Interracial Comm, filling an underrepresented group in media. I saw that same fire in her eyes when she talked about women motorcycle riders. She was passionate about making a change in the world and she showed that everyday. Her authenticity will be missed from this world❤️ I included an excerpt of her writing as a photo.

I am so sorry for your loss. I sat near Mack during our most recent maymester at school. She had such distinct energy, she was powerful. She came into class knowing who she was, and it was inspiring. Rest in peace <3

I am so sorry to hear about MacKenzie’s passing. She was a student of mine at UGA and I loved reading her writing. I loved her quiet sense of humor and insights in class discussions and when she would chat with me on occasion after class. Such a lovely and interesting person who thought deeply about things. What a profound loss.
I wish I could attend her memorial in LAWRENCEVILLE but I am recovering from surgery. Jennifer Monahan
