Marshall A Gordon, age 91, a life long resident of Birmingham passed away peacefully as his home on Sept 7, 2012; having lived over 14 years with Alzheimer's. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife Penny, of 65 years; two cherished daughters, Bhimi Linda Cayce and Debra Gordon-Hellman (Jerry); precious granddaughter, Rayna Gordon-Hellman; brother Bernard Gordon (Helen) of NY. Marshall will be also missed by his cousins, nieces, nephews and brother-in-law Jerry Routman and many close friends. Marshall was a soft spoken, unassuming man whose unconditional love for his family was his first priority. All through their lives, his daughters treasured their wise, gentle father and his non-judgmental advice. Marshall was a giving, kind and thoughtful friend who was highly esteemed by all who knew him. His deep-rooted devotion to Temple Beth-El was exemplified by his 2 year presidency, outstanding leadership of many committees and major projects, and as one of the five "Founding Fathers" of the Temple foundation, an organization to protect its' future. Marshall's leadership abilities extended to the City of Fairfield where he grew up and was in business all his life and served for many yrs on the Board of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the Elks Club and enjoyed their camaraderie for many years. Marshall was an avid reader and was keenly knowledgeable on many diverse subjects and enjoyed lively discussions with friends. Three of his favorite hobbies were fishing with his buddies, playing gin rummy and his passion at working cross word puzzles, which he was quite an expert. He graduated from UAB in Tuscaloosa and later served as an Army Captain in Europe during World War II where he received Honors. We want to give a special thanks to Bertha Ruth, who has been with our family for 46 years. Marshall would want us to give a fond thanks to his devoted caregiver of 3 years, Glenn Bradley who became his dear friend, and also special mention to Derick Amin, his evening caregiver. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1:30 at Temple Beth-El with burial to follow at Elmwood cemetery. The family requests donations be made to Temple Beth-El at 2179 Highland Ave, Birmingham, AL 35255.
