Merrill Eugene Compton, Jr., MD passed away peacefully at his home in Mountain
Brook, Alabama on August 17,2020. He was 86 years of age.
Merrill was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his mother,
Evelyn Clarke Compton, his father, Merrill Eugene Compton, and his sister, Evelyn
Compton Cobden. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Thomas Davidson Compton of
63 years, his sons David Merrill Compton (wife Kimberly) and Edward Thomas Compton
(wife Doris). Grand Children: Alexander Davidson Compton, Eric Merrill Compton,
Stephanie Bragg, and Jamie Bragg. His brother in law James Wesley Davidson (wife
Deborah), sister in law Ann Louise Davidson Hudspeth (husband Robert). There are 6
nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews, and 8 great great nieces and
nephews.
Merrill was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church, a big part of his life serving
as a Deacon, Elder, Fine Arts and Finance Committees. He also worked with teaching three
and four year old children in Sunday School.
He attended grades 1-12 in Mamaroneck, New York. He went to Vanderbilt University,
where he met his wife in their sophomore year helping her cut up a frog. From Vandy
he went to the University of Tennessee Medical School. After 4 years of residency, he
began his practice of Orthopaedic Surgery for 35 years.
After 8 months of practice, he was drafted into the Navy for the War in Vietnam and
sent to the Marine Base at Camp Pendleton, California. He served there as an
Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Marine Hospital. He was a Lt. Commander in the 3rd
Medical Battalion of the 3rd Marine Division. After a year there, he was shipped out to
Vietnam to Phu Bai, and from there to Dong Ha (approximately 10 miles from the
Demilitarized Zone). He was the CEOof the Field Hospital there. Merrill was in
Vietnam during the TET offensive.
Merrill enjoyed his involvement in the following: Shades Valley Rotary Club, Botanical
Gardens working with herbs, National Association of Watch and Clocks, Model Train
HO scale, Sailing our boat Tranquility, Phi Kappa Psifraternity, and Phi Chi Medical
fraternity, and member of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

A private service at IPCColumbarium will be held for immediate family members. A
