

Nickey William Velotas died peacefully in his home on May 31, 2020 in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 89. He is survived by his nephew, John W. (Patti) Darabaris of Oklahoma City, OK; nieces: Kathye Leach, Winslow, AR; Diane Alford, Farmington, AR; Patricia Darabaris Jones, Olathe, KC; and a host of loving great-nephews and nieces; cousins and friends. Nickey is preceded in death by his parents, Vasilios and Catina Velotas; and his sisters, Despina Velotas Darabaris and Virginia Velotas. Nickey retired after working 35 years for the Mountain Brook School System where he taught Latin at Mountain Brook High School and was also head of their Foreign Language Department. Nickey was a faithful, devoted member of the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He will be remembered for his great devotion to our church community as he served generously of his time on Sundays as the organist for over 70 years as well as many special occasions. In November of 2009, Nickey received the Archangel Michael Award. This award is presented annually by the Metropolis of Atlanta to honor and celebrate a person who has made a significant contribution by their deep faith, commitment and service to the Greek Orthodox Church. Serving as pallbearers are James A. Clanton II; John W. Darabaris; Michael D. Grammas; Carl Green; Pete C. Hontzas; Michael J. Velotas; Peter J. Velotas and Terry J. White. Funeral service is scheduled on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Interment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery. Officiating the service will be the Rev. Dr. Gregory Edwards, Dean of the Cathedral; Rev. Father Paul Costopoulos and Rev. Father Micah Hirschy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral Agape Fund at 307 19th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35233. His memory will live among all of us who knew him!
