Sid was the son of Clyde H. Brown and Velma Matilda Massey Brown. He was the brother of Clyde H. Brown, Jr and a sister who died as a child, Hazel Lorraine Brown. Each of these family members pre-deceased him.
Sid is survived by his beloved family: his wife of 72 years, Jeannine Till Brown, his daughter Lane and son Norwood (Jenn). Sid often expressed gratitude for the tender and faithful care of his wife and children. He was an exceptional husband and father. Sid is also survived by three generations of loving nieces, nephews, their spouses, and children, with whom he spent treasured hours. Sid's happy and loving nature was apparent in his relationships with his immediate and extended family and his friends. Every encounter evidenced his humor and his kindness. And everyone knew he could "fix anything". He shared the magic of coat hangers with multiple generations.
Sidney was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served in the Army Air Force as a radio operator in the European Theatre. After the war, he completed his mechanical engineering education and met his wife to be - at Auburn Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). He became a Licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer. He began his engineering career at Allis Chalmers until being re-called to the Korean Conflict, where he worked on the Early Missile Defense System project. At discharge, he began his 40-year career at US Steel, moving through roles of increasing responsibility during his tenure.
Sid was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church for over 70 years. He was an active member of his Sunday School class and enjoyed worshipping and socializing with family and friends there. Sid loved working outside, and built a barn, playhouse, and log cabin on his home-place in Patton Chapel. He kept countless tractors and vehicles in good repair, no doubt instructed by his childhood projects of building 'go carts' from wood and washing machine engines. Always a hard worker, Sid enjoyed his Liberty Magazine delivery route (except for the dogs), and his work at A&P grocery store prior to graduating high school. He worked with Jeannine to care for their property for many years. His favorite places were his front porch rocker, the playhouse swing, and anywhere his wife Jeannine could be found.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Monday, January 13 at Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Avenue, Birmingham. Visitation hour will begin at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Shades Crest Baptist Church or to Big Oak Ranch, 6000 Shelley Drive, Springville, Alabama, 35146.
