Consuelo Duron Rodriguez, “Mami”, passed away at home with family by her side, on February 1st, 2018, at the young age of 92. She was the loving wife to Jose Isabel Rodriguez Rodriguez for 71 years, who passed away recently on December 17th, 2017.
She was also the loving mother of 8 children: Lydia Rodriguez Thompson, Jose Fidel Rodriguez, Jose Albert Rodriguez (deceased), Jose Richard Rodriguez, Consuelo Maria Rodriguez-Puccetti, Mary Lucinda DeMoss, Mary McClure, and Maria Cristina Rodriguez-Karl. She was a caring mother-in-law to all the spouses of her children and she cherished her 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was truly blessed with so much family.
Mami had 13 siblings four still living: 2 who reside in San Jose, Lucinda Estebane and Nachita Martinez, Cristina Duron who lives in Texas, and her only living brother who lives in Perris, California, who happens to be me, Danny Duron. She has also left behind 28 nephews and nieces and their 99 children and their grandchildren.
She was born in Torreón, in the state of Coahuila, Mexico on April 30th, 1925 and attended nursing school at the University of Torreón. As a young woman she loved to read, to design dresses, to write, going to the movies, riding horses, and being out in nature. She met her smart, handsome, and loving husband Jose, in Puebla, Mexico, while he was studying to be a doctor, and she a missionary as a teacher. They had three children before moving to the United States for a better future. They were blessed with five more children in the U.S.A.
The education of her children was very important to her, especially the teachings from the Bible. She loved to read the bible with her husband and to her children. Mami expressed her love by sharing her vast knowledge and wisdom with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed classical music, art, playing the piano, and she taught her daughters how to play the piano as well. Mami also taught her children how to sew and knit, always the teacher in all areas of our lives.
She also enjoyed working outside in her garden and loved taking long walks with Papi, at Fairmount Park, and later walks around their neighborhood. Mami loved fluffy dogs and all types of birds, especially love birds and parakeets. She loved collecting different types of crystal glassware and beautiful china to enjoy with her family on special occasions and to use for our Sunday dinners. Mami loved having tea parties when we came to visit, using her beautiful china tea cups. She also collected beautiful angels of all sizes, which were displayed on her piano.
Mami also realized the importance of staying active in order to keep healthy in all areas, including our minds and souls just like her husband believed. To the very end she was positive and always hopeful. She truly believed that “with God, all things are possible”. You rarely heard her complain, even while raising 8 children and a few grandchildren as well. We were all blessed to have her as our mother.
She loved and nurtured her children and all her grandchildren, loved God, and the USA, just like Papi. Our Mami will be missed by all, but she also left a lasting legacy—she will always live in our hearts. We know she is now in heaven with the Lord, her parents, her son Albert, and is with her love of her life, Papi, once again. May she rest in eternal peace. We will always love you Mami!
