The myth, the man, the legend. Daniel Walter Las, born 05/14/30 in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from the Florida Naval Academy in 1948. He met and married the love of his life June Las, in 1950. They moved to California in 1957 with their beautiful children and started working for Kaiser Steel Fontana for 29 years as a machinist. After the demise of Kaiser he worked for Southern California Edison until 1992 when he officially retired.
After retirement he found himself with an abundant supply of time on his hands and began doing volunteer work. He started as a band booster with Bloomington High School, continuing long after the grandchildren graduated. Wally and several friends in the community then started the Bloomington Community Boosters in 1999, an organization dedicated to restoring the pride in the community. Wally spearheaded the idea of building a military monument which now stands at Ayala Park in Bloomington Ca. Wally spent many years volunteering with California Speedway in Guest Services to finance all of the projects the Boosters proudly completed, including an annual Christmas parade. Wally then took his passion to the next level, and sat on the San Bernardino County Municipal Advisory Committee for many years. As a cancer survivor, he was also passionate about donating time and funds to the American Cancer Society.
Wally eventually decided to retire from his volunteer work and pursued his passion for travel and fun, making monthly trips with the Happy Wanderers RV club, and hosting horseshoe tournaments to benefit the Cancer Society.
Wally put his all into everything he did and everyone he loved, and he will truly be missed by his wife of 65 years; grand children and great grandchildren; and many, many, treasured friends.
