Born on February 4, 1958, in Southern California, James lived a vibrant life rooted in love, laughter, and legacy. He spent cherished years in San Bernardino and Ladera Heights, known for his magnetic presence, soul-deep charisma, and infectious humor.
James was excruciatingly hilarious, with a smile that lit up every room and a bold, outrageous personality that made him unforgettable. As “Joe Serious,” his stand-up comedy brought audiences to tears with laughter and truth. Sharing stages with comedians like Katt Williams, he used his gift to uplift, disarm, and connect. No one remained a stranger in his presence.
Beyond the spotlight, James had an ear for talent and worked as a concert promoter, helping bring legends such as B.B. King and Denise LaSalle to the stage. His love for music and community pulsed through everything he touched.
In time, James transformed his ability to connect into a deeper calling—healing. After earning his Master’s Degree in Social Work, he became a dedicated therapist, working closely with individuals and families affected by trauma and domestic violence, especially those within the Children and Family Services system. His blend of humor, empathy, and wisdom offered sanctuary and strength to countless lives.
A devoted Born Again Christian, James’s faith anchored his life. Ordained as a deacon in 2018, he became known as “The Preaching Deacon,” a title that reflected both his spiritual fervor and his heart for people. His journey was one of redemption, grace, and divine purpose.
James completed his earthly assignment surrounded by family, friends, and faith. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Ruby Lee Williams, and his brother, Kerry LaMont Williams.
He leaves to cherish his memory: - His children: Christopher Ross, Kandace Ross, James Jr., Alexis Ross-Brown, Quinton Ross, Quincy Ross, Rodney Ross, Sharita Johnson, and Destiny Miles - His siblings: She’lah La Voyn-Sallis (who lovingly cared for him during his illness), Stanley
