
Charlie R Simmons, 79, of Florida, formerly of Saybrook, IL , passed away June 6, 2015 in Monticello, IL. Mr. Simmons was born June 17, 1935 in Gibson City, IL the son of Shirley and Mildred Simmons. He married Betty Ann Crawford in Saybrook, IL, February 14th, 1954 . Charlie and Betty lived in Saybrook where they owned and operated Simmons Appliance for many years. He loved his customers and never refused anyone a refrigerator or TV even if they couldn’t pay. Charlie was very active in the Saybrook community serving on the board of State Bank of Saybrook, was active in Lions Club and was instrumental in establishing Indian Springs Golf Course. He was proud to be a lifetime member of the Moose. Prior to retirement, any spare time was spent on his ham radio, K9QDM, talking to people all over the world. Charlie and Betty retired to Golf Lakes in Bradenton, Florida. It didn’t take long for the Golf Lakes Community to realize they could call Charlie to graciously fix their TV or appliance and never accept a dime. At Golf Lakes, he was the go-to person in picking exercise equipment for everyone to enjoy. Charlie and Betty were volunteers for Meals on Wheels, and the New Resident Committee. His favorite hobbies included golfing and fishing in Ely, Minnesota. He will always be remembered for his smile and willingness to help.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty and a daughter Rae Ann Maupin, a grandson Jeremy (Jennifer) Maupin and 3 great-grandchildren, Mia, Jonah and Leo Maupin. He is also survived by 1 niece and 1 nephew, and numerous cousins and special friends. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dick Simmons.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3-6 pm on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Indian Springs Golf Course, with the memorial service to begin at 4 pm. Private inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Saybrook, IL.
