A private service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington. Cremation rites have been accorded by East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carl S. Martin American Legion Post #635, Normal.

He was born on January 11, 1939 in Normal, son of Merle D. and Lerttie L. Savage Gilmore. He married Carole Sue Guethle on October 18, 1958, she preceded him in death on August 18, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Clark Strader.

Surviving are two sons, Mark (Cathy Toon) Gilmore and Chad D. (Ann) Gilmore, both of Bloomington. Also surviving are one brother, Merle (Beverlee) Gilmore of Morton; one sister, Gertrude Strader of Ypsilanti, MI and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a United States Air Force veteran, serving during the vietnam era from 1961 - 1965. He was also a member of the Carl S. Martin American Legion Post #635 in Normal.

Gene worked at Firestone, then later as a union carpenter for Local #63. In 2001, he retired as a Millwright, where he was a member of the Millwright Local #1693 for nearly 50 years.

He loved camping from his RV and visiting with family. He also liked to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Gene would always give a lending hand to help anyone that asked. He enjoyed keeping busy in his community and never passed up a good garage sale to find a good bargain.
