Joyce was born in Normal on October 26, 1932, to the late Lloyd Abbey and Eva Capps Abbey. She married Delmar Clayton Jones on February 22, 1952 at the First Methodist Church in Normal. Their love story began in a field while detasseling corn. A farm boy swept this city girl off her feet.
She is survived by her husband, Delmar, and their four children, Linda Jones of Colfax; Julie (Shawn) Milling of Bloomington; Richard (Deborah) Jones of Arrowsmith; and Lloyd (Jocelyn) Jones of Jacksonville, FL; her sister, Barbara (Marvin) Bonny of Melbourne, FL; a sister-in-law, Virginia Abbey of Wisconsin; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dana Abbey.
Joyce graduated from Normal Community High School in 1950. After high school, she worked at the First National Bank of Normal while her husband was serving in the US army. After his return, she worked on the family farm and raised their four children. Later in life, she worked at Bartels’ grocery store in Colfax as well as the Gun Club in rural Colfax.
She was a long time member of the Arrowsmith Christian Church and was also a member of the Order of The Eastern Star. She volunteered her time and talent at the McLean County Museum of History by restoring and completing quilts and also participated in an organized movement to make blankets for the homeless population in the local community.
She was very talented and enjoyed crocheting, knitting and quilting, leaving behind many blankets and quilts for her family to always remember her by. She also left them with many fond memories of playing board games at her dining room table, eating some of her favorite dishes (delicious drop cookies, butterscotch pie, apple cake and porcupine meatballs), playing the organ and doing puzzles.
She provided a loving and supportive foundation for her family. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family or the donor’s choice.
