

A private committal service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Bloomington, IL. Arrangements are being handled by East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington.
Mr. Kennedy was born on November 19, 1936 in New Castle, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Octavia Brown Kennedy of New Castle, IN; three sisters, Juanita Kriner, Violet Crane, and Betty Jean Kennedy, all of New Castle, IN; two brothers, Pvt James A. Kennedy, United States Marine Corps, killed in action on New Georgia Island in 1943 and William Dale Kennedy of Columbus, IN.
He graduated from New Castle Senior High School in 1954. He attended Ball State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1958 and his Master’s degree in 1961. He met his future wife, Colleen Cragun, while attending Ball State. They were married in Indianapolis, IN in 1958. Mr. Kennedy received his Doctoral degree from the University of Illinois in 1971.
Mr. Kennedy is survived by his wife, Colleen Kennedy of Bloomington and three children, Deena (Dan) Horn, Larry Kevin (Lucilia) Kennedy and Laura Kennedy, all of Bloomington. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Max Horn, Emma Horn, Jack Horn, Ethan Kennedy, Sean Kennedy and Anthony Maldonado.
He taught in the Columbus, IN public schools from 1958-1962 and joined Illinois State Normal University in 1962 as a faculty member in the Thomas Metcalf School. He taught in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education from 1968 until his retirement from Illinois State University in 1997. He served also as the Director of Research and Development for the College of Education, as Acting Chairman of the Department of Specialized Educational Development, and as Associate Dean of the College of Education.
Mr. Kennedy was the author of two novels for young adults, “The Wolf’s Head Journal” and “The Path of the Warrior.” He was also the author of the textbook, “Teaching the Elementary Language Arts,” as well as a freelance writer of travel and historical features for newspapers.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Normal, IL.
