

Mark A. “George” Shankel (61), life-long resident of Heyworth, IL passed away August 18, 2020 at his home after a long illness. Born July 15, 1959 in Bloomington, IL he was the youngest of three sons born to George L. and Leta F. Johnson Shankel. Mark farmed in Heyworth and the surrounding areas for most of his life, later working for A&R Electric and Maas Radiator.
He married Teri E. Holforty on March 27, 1982 at the home of Roger and Jeannie Lee in Heyworth, IL. She survives.
Mark leaves three children, Layla M. Shankel, George A. Shankel and Lake J. Shankel, all of Heyworth, IL. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Brittany M. (Bardon Birk) Kessinger, Wapella, IL, Jay Allen Kessinger, St. Augustine, FL, Alexandria E. Shankel, Heyworth, IL, Chance A. Williamson, Heyworth, IL and Olivia P. Shankel, Heyworth, IL. Three nieces, five nephews, sisters-in-law Carla Shankel, Heyworth, IL and Nancy (Michael) Francisco, Normal IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leta Shankel, bother Johnny L. Shankel, brother Gary D. Shankel, son-in-law Richard Williamson and great-granddaughter, Baylee M. Birk.
Growing up on the farm, Mark loved riding dirt bikes, ATV’s and driving tractors. He discovered his passion for Harley Davidson Motorcycles and devoted many years to riding with friends, going to races and cruising the back roads discovering new places. Mark enjoyed watching NASCAR and football and loved spending time with his family and friends.
