

Mary Hazel Van Hook, 97, of Le Roy Manor, Le Roy, IL, passed away Friday, March 01, 2013 at 3:45 am. She was born September 15, 1915 in Chinook, MT, the daughter of Jay and Bessie Shaffer. She was raised in Waynesville, IL with eight brothers and six sisters. She graduated from Waynesville High School in 1930. Mary Hazel married Louis John VanHook on March 31, 1934. They were happily married for 63 years and had nine children.
Survivors include: her children; Paul (Barbara) VanHook, James (Carol) VanHook, Robert (Bonnie) VanHook, Ed (Karen) VanHook, Susan (Ronald) Darnall, Linda Mehl, and Steven (Tosha) VanHook, twenty six grandchildren, forty two great grandchildren, and fourteen great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis, two sons; Donald and Phillip, one grandson, one great grandson, four brothers, and four sisters.
Mary Hazel and her beloved “Louie” enjoyed fishing, travel, gardening, and the large family they created. They were the proud owners of VanHook’s Mattress and Upholstery in Bloomington, IL for sixty years. Mary Hazel attended Bloomington Bible Church. She leaves quite a legacy.
A graveside service reuniting Mary and her husband, Louis John Van Hook, who passed away Dec. 27, 1955, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waynesville Township Cemetery, Waynesville. Friends and family are welcome. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Hazel’s honor to Le Roy Manor, 509 S. Buck Rd., Le Roy, IL 61752.
