Born January 22, 1971, in Springfield, IL to Douglas and Rosalie (White) Melton, Rob lived a life filled with passion, laughter, and deep connection. Though he grew up in central Illinois, he spent most of his adult life in Arizona, where he embraced the beauty of the desert and an active, adventurous lifestyle. He was an avid mountain biker, and hiker - always happiest outdoors and in motion.
Music was one of Rob’s greatest loves. He played guitar and found deep joy in listening to and sharing the music that moved him - especially the band R.E.M., which he adored. His sense of humor was magnetic; he was wildly funny and full of good energy that drew people in.
He proudly served as an EMT with the Phoenix Rescue Squad, always guided by a desire to help others. He also cherished the bonds of friendship, especially a tight-knit group from his college days who remained an important part of his life through the years.
Rob is survived by his beloved daughter, Emily Melton; his sisters, Cathy Thoenes of Towanda and Jennifer (Tim) Grusy of Gridley; several nieces and nephews, including Stephanie Shah, who provided great care and comfort in Rob’s last years; and his long-time best friend, Tim Potten.
Rob’s smile and influence on those he loved - and who deeply loved him - will be profoundly missed. Health complications took his earthly body too soon, but his spirit remains in the memories, laughter, and love he gave. He lived an incredible life.
A memorial service celebrating Rob’s life is being planned in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois, June 12, 2025 from 5-7PM at East Lawn Funeral Home 1102 Airport Rd Bloomington IL, 61704.
In Rob’s honor, we are asking those who wish to contribute to consider donating to a 529 college savings plan established for his daughter, Emily. Donations may be made at www.ugift529.com using the gift code X73-21M.
