He was born to Jeff and Johanna Frost McFarland on September 30, 1989 in St. Louis, MO, a place he always considered home.
Zac was a son, father, brother and a friend. He was the proud father of Gavin, whom he loved deeply. He is also survived by his parents, Jeff and Johanna McFarland of Bloomington; brother, Daniel (Jenn) McFarland of Kewanee; his cousins and "little cousins," whom he adored; and many other family members and friends who loved him.
Zac was charismatic, handsome, and full of life. He loved the outdoors, sports, skateboarding, camping, live music and nature. He had a servant heart and would help anyone in need, often stopping to assist strangers without hesitation. Though he carried a tough exterior, he was deeply compassionate and sensitive, especially towards those who were hurting.
He shared a deep bond with his pets. He recently lost his long-time cat, Spetsnaz, which affected him deeply. He is survived by his beloved dog, Penny, who was by his side through thick and thin. The family is especially grateful to the hospital staff who compassionately allowed Penny to visit Zac in the hospital and ICU room, bringing him comfort during his final days.
Zac proudly served in the Illinois Army National Guard. He loved St. Louis and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Zac lived with deep trauma and struggled with addiction and mental health. He would share his journey with others, in hopes to help them with their own battles. He found support and community through Celebrate Recovery, whose members stood faithfully beside him and his family. In death, Zac fulfilled his desire to help others through his Gift of Hope tissue and organ donation, give life and hope to more than 100 people.
A Celebration Of Life will be held from 11am - 3pm on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at First Assembly of God Church, 800 E. Vernon Avenue, Normal, IL.
In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe has been established to support Gavin and the family.
