

Annemarie Springer, 87, died on September 28, 2011 at her home in Bloomington. Annemarie was born on June 29th, 1924 in Berlin, Germany, the only child of Ernst and Elisabeth (Strassmann) Keiner. She left Germany for Boston in 1947 and worked as an administrative assistant at Harvard University. Annemarie met George Springer at Harvard and they married in 1950. The couple resided in Boston; Evanston, Illinois; and Lawrence, Kansas before moving to Bloomington in 1964. Annemarie earned a B.A. in Art History from Kansas University, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University, and taught at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Herron School of Art. She retired from there in 1989. Annemarie served as an art consultant for the Benedictine Monastery of the Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana and authored Nineteenth Century German-American Church Artists. She also served as past secretary of the Indiana German Heritage Society. Annemarie was an accomplished scholar, artist, and pianist. Surviving are her husband Dr. George Springer; three children, Dr. Leonard Springer and his wife Debbie Bushnell Springer of St. Martinville, Louisiana, Dr. Claudia Springer and her husband Geoff Adams of Newton, Massachusetts, and Joel Springer and his wife Yumi Izuyama of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and two grandsons, Benjamin Springer and his wife Flora Paoa, and Jack Adams.
