
He was born in Bloomington, IN on November 23, 1921 to Zula (Ray) and Robert W. Burns. As a young man he worked in the CCC before joining the Army during WW II. After a medical discharge, he started his career as an iron worker traveling across the country building bridges, air fields and other structures. He and wife Louise (Burris) lived many years in Chico, California. In later years he was an over-the-road trucker.
His hobbies included traveling to the annual Glen Miller festival in Iowa, Big band music, Cubs baseball, Colts football and Pacer basketball.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles Robert Burns and sisters Kathryn Crandall, Lillian Zark, Dorothy Helton, Bettie Eggers and Faye Baynes, as well as siblings Pansy and Ray Burns.
He is survived by an extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews. Services were Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, IN. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.deremiahfryemortuary.com.
