

George Frank Vanderwerp, 91, of Bloomington died Thursday, February 12, 2015 in Hearthstone Health Campus. He was born September 16, 1923 in Muskegon, Michigan to William and Bernice Vanderwerp. He was retired from General Electric in Bloomington.
Survivors include a longtime friend and companion, Helen Wilbur of Bloomington; son, John Vanderwerp and his partner Melissa Brown of Bloomington; daughter, Mary Vanderwerp and her husband Rick Ball of Duluth, MN; grandson, Emerson Ball of Duluth, MN and a sister-in-law Bette Vanderwerp of Muskegon, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Joann Dobben and her husband Cliff; and a brother, William Vanderwerp.
Memberships include the American Legion, Burton Woolery post # 18 and the Experimental Aircraft Association chapter # 650. George was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy having served on the USS LST-656 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II. He graduated from Muskegon SR. High and Muskegon Jr. College and then earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1947. He started his career at Norge Division of the Borg Warner Corp in Muskegon. He then transferred to the Hot Point Division of General Electric in Chicago, after several years there he was part of a team of 6 men assigned to place purchased equipment in and start the side by side refrigerator plant in Bloomington. He also worked for Stewart Warner Air Conditioning plant in Lebanon, IN and the Duncan Electric Meter Plant in Lafayette, IN.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on February 28, 5-7 pm in Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel, 700 W Gourley Pike.
