Nécrologie de Leva G. Young
Leva Gladys Young, age 96, former longtime resident of Bloomington, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at Aperion Care Spencer. She was born January 23, 1923, in Oolitic, the second child and first daughter of Clint Colman Young and Lettie (Tucker) Young. Leva graduated from Stinesville High School with the class of 1941 where she played on the girls’ basketball team as a five foot six guard and sang in the school’s glee club. She worked for 19 years at RCA, 19 years at Holland Dairy, Sears, and lastly at Indiana University. She was an avid fan of IU Women’s Basketball, a meticulous quilter, seamstress, any kind of needle work, cookie baker, and for many years would find time to prepare a Sunday meal for anyone who wanted to partake of her wonderful hospitality. She loved gardening, reading, and her beloved dogs and cats that were always a part of her life. She married George Huser Young in June of 1941. To this union one daughter and two sons were born—Martha Jane Young, Clint LeRoy Young, and William Robert Young. She was predeceased by her parents, husband of 66 years (2007), infant daughter, Martha Jane (1941), and sons, Bob (2015) and Clint (2018), brothers—Ira, Bill, and Tom Young, and sisters—Leona Sheppard and Ada Layman. She is survived by daughters-in-law Janet Young of Livonia, MI, and Charlotte Martin, Bloomington; grandsons Bill (Tracy) Young, Bloomington; John (Raquel) Young, Fishkill, NY, and Dan (Carrie) Young, Livonia, MI, and three step grandsons—David, Sam and John Martin. Also included are nine great grandchildren, two sisters—Bea Franklin and Lucille McHaley, both of Spencer, and many nieces and nephews. Leva was an active member of the New Unionville Baptist Church and Unionville Senior Center. Plagued with health issues much of her life, she never let it stop her from holding down a job, working in her church and community, taking care of loved ones, and enjoying being a “true child of the King.” Calling hours are on Sunday, January 12, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Deremiah Frye Mortuary; 700 West Gourley Pike, Bloomington. A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. also in the mortuary. Interment will follow in Chambersville Cemetery. Those who wish to remember Leva in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana (www.alz.org/indiana), an animal shelter of your choice, or to Gideons International.
