Samuel D. "Sam" Smith

Samuel D. “Sam” Smith, 60, Bloomington, Indiana passed away May 28, 2016 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Sam was born September 10, 1955 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Ralph J. and Norma Jeanne (Cardwell) Smith. Sam was a 1973 graduate of Bloomington High School South where he played on the 1972 IHSAA State Baseball Championship Team, he was a 1976 graduate of Indiana University. Sam was a CPA and was serving as Budgets and Grants Manager for the City of Bloomington. He was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. He was very active in youth baseball, he played on the 1972 Babe Ruth Indiana State Championship Team, and was a coach and leader of the Ellettsville Little League and Babe Ruth Programs. He was involved in starting the Girls Softball Program in Ellettsville. Sam had been a member of the Ellettsville Parks and Recreation Board and Ellettsville Planning Commission. In 2013 he received a certificate from the Senior Management Program at Ashridge in the UK.

Sam is survived by his wife, Martha (Fenton) Smith; children, Amy (Andy) Deremiah, Rebecca (Jeremiah) Schroeder and Sam C. (Brittany) Smith; brother, Jeff (Lisa) Smith; grandchildren, Rylan Deremiah, Corinne and Payton Smith, Myra and Charley Deremiah, Claire and Morgan Schroeder; mother, Norma Jeanne Smith; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Louise Fenton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janet (Gregg) Floyd; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John (Monica) Fenton; sister-in-law, Shirley Smith; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph J. Smith and brother, Ralph E. Smith; and a grandmother, Marie Trovero.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016 and after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with Brothers Sean Olson and Jeff Underwood officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
