

The Rev. Dr. Sloan T. Letman, III was born on August 4th, 1947 and passed away at the age of 67 on Sunday, September 28, 2014 in Chicago, Il. He was the only child born to Amy (Branch) and Sloan T. Letman, Jr. On July 7th, 1973 he married Clyniece L. Watson M.D. and they welcomed their son Sloan IV into the world on May 9th, 1980. Dr. Letman’s funeral was October 4th, 2014 at A.A. Rayner and Sons Funeral Chapels, 318 E. 71st St.
A scholar trained in the Jesuit tradition, Sloan attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory School and Loyola University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Master of Arts in Urban Studies. He continued in his scholastic pursuits to attain a Juris Doctor from DePaul University as well as a Master of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary.
Sloan served in a multitude of roles in Higher Education including Full-time Lead faculty at American InterContinental University-Online Campus, Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at Chicago State University, Dean of Social Sciences and Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Loyola University of Chicago. During his time in academia he published over 35 scholarly articles and 11 books.
Ordained an Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Sloan served in many ministerial roles beginning with the position of Assistant Pastor at Bethel (Robbins, IL), Wayman, and St. Paul A.M.E. Churches. In the spirit of ecumenism he continued to do the Lord’s work serving as interim pastor of Seventh Presbyterian Church and as Pastoral Coordinator of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Clyniece Watson-Letman MD, his son Sloan T. Letman, IV daughter-in-law Rev. Tara Tetzlaff-Letman, and granddaughter Vanessa Tetzlaff, and a host of relatives, friends, and colleagues. In lieu of flowers a scholarship fund in his name will be created at Chicago State University.
