Derrick Anthony Jones, beloved husband, grandfather and father of two, passed away in his home on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. Born in Kingston, Jamaica on November 13, 1943, Derrick was 81 years of age. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carole Elizabeth; his two daughters Kathryn Cherie and Camille Nadine; his grandson Evander Francis Jones Bottomley; his sisters Paulette Grant and Charmaine Jones; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear family members in the US and abroad.
Son of the late William Egbert “Balty” Jones and Lucille Dobson Madgewick, Derrick graduated from Kingsway High School in 1962 and always said that his years at Kingsway had a profound effect on him and shaped his life. Not long after, he met Carole, the absolute love of his life, promptly converted to Adventism, and together they moved to the US in 1967. The two married in New York at Linden Boulevard Seventh-Day Adventist Church in 1968. Subsequently, the Joneses moved to Massachusetts, raising their kids in Worcester, Shrewsbury, and Bellingham before taking early retirement and relocating to Coconut Creek, Florida in 2002.
While living in Massachusetts, working full-time and raising two children, Derrick earned a bachelor's degree from Worcester State College, then an MBA from Assumption College. His working life in MA saw him climb the ranks from a meter reader to become a manager at Commonwealth Electric in 1986. In Florida, he worked for FedEx for more than 20 years, and was still running circles around employees a quarter his age until a few days before his passing.
Derrick was a devout Christian, being an active member of the Northboro Seventh-Day Adventist Church in MA, and the Eliatha Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Tamarac, FL. Whether teaching sabbath school lessons to the youth, or playing dominoes after vespers in the church basement; talking politics or giving advice; deftly climbing mango and pear trees or sledding with his daughters, Derrick always had a big smile on his face, a kind word on his lips, and love in his heart. He was generous, genuine, humble, smart, funny, and loyal. Having never been the same since his wife’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis 4 years ago, he now rests in peace, waiting for his beloved to join him in paradise.
In lieu of flowers, it was Derrick’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to Kingsway High School.
