Howard E. McCall, age 88, long-time resident of Boca Raton, Florida, died on December 8, 2011. Howard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marjorie F. (Peggy) McCall; children, Carol (John) McNally of Orlando, Howard E., Jr “Buz” (Patricia) of Boca Raton, and Russell (Mary) of Littleton, CO; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; sister, Betty Ann Monroe of Vero Beach, FL; and, four nieces and nephews.
Howard was born July 20, 1923 in Browns Station, MO to Earl and Dora McCall. In 1941 Howard enlisted in the United States Navy. He met Peggy while stationed in Vero Beach, FL. Seven years and three children later, Howard enrolled at the University of Miami, transferring to the University of Illinois, where he graduated with a degree in Architecture. In 1958 he opened one of Boca Raton’s first architectural practices what later became McCall and Lynch, Architects and Planners. Howard designed many residences, commercial businesses and churches in the Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Howard’s ongoing gift to Boca Raton will be the groundwork he laid through many years of service on the Planning and Zoning Board and Historic Preservation Board.
Howard used his gifts and talents in service to his community through the Rotary Club, and in service to his church at St. Gregory’s. Howard loved boating, especially sailing. He often joked that he chose his friends wisely because he was fortunate to have dear friends with BIG boats. Howard and Peggy traveled extensively. He satisfied a passion for photography by taking pictures in most every country in the world. Howard was a hobbyist, and happiest developing his photos, building remote control airplanes, flying stunt kites, and shooting for that elusive great round of golf. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends.
Howard’s life will be celebrated with a Memorial Service at 2 PM on December 29th at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, 100 NE Mizner BLVD, Boca Raton, 33432. Remembrances may be made in Howard’s name to the Memorial Fund at St Gregory’s or the General Fund of the Boca Raton Historical Society, 71 N. Federal HWY, Boca Raton, 33432.
