“Loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather”
John J Stein (aka Jack), age 95, passed away with dignity in the presence of family and loved ones at the Hospice Center of Bethesda East Baptist Hospital in Boynton Beach, FL at 2PM on Monday, August 11, 2025.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, a favorite uncle and friend to everyone he met. The love of his life and wife of 54 years, Jean Joanne (Fuchs) Stein, passed away in 2008.
John grew up in Flushing, New York, and spent the summers with his family on Long Island’s Great South Bay in Amityville. After graduating from Amityville High School in 1948, John continued his education at the Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute (now known as Farmingdale State College) for automotive, diesel, and aircraft engine engineering. In September 1950, John contracted the Polio virus which severely damaged his right leg, and he was one of the lucky ones. Despite this challenge, John graduated with an Associate’s degree. While attending college, a classmate, Roy Fuchs, introduced John to his younger sister, Jean Joanne Fuchs. John and Jean were married on February 14, 1954. After college, John initially worked at Republic Aviation Corporation as an aviation engineer. After John completed his service in the Navy Reserves from1950 to 1958, John pursued a career with Prudential selling Life Insurance and financial planning services.
John and Jean raised their three children (Diane Bachelor, Susan Hull, and John) in Shelton Connecticut. John enjoyed boating on the Long Island Sound, camping, hunting, and fishing. When his father passed away in 1972, John purchased the small house that his father built on a lake in the Pocono mountains in northeast PA from his mother. The lake house was the epicenter of many gatherings of friends and family for several decades.
John and Jean moved to Bradenton FL shortly after their son, John, completed graduate school in 1983, and enjoyed boating, swimming, and fishing in the Gulf. In the 1990’s, they adopted RV camping as their primary activity and travelled the lower-48 states and Alaska over the years. John and Jean were very active socially, made friends easily, and were always ready for a party as the host or participant, either organized or ad hoc parties. Despite issues with his leg, John and Jean were accomplished dancers and enjoyed life to the fullest … it was always “5-o’clock somewhere”.
John is survived by his daughters Diane Bachelor and Susan Hull, and son John, 9 grandchildren (Tommy, Heather, Adam; Derek, Jesse, Vanessa; Mary Alyce, Katherine, Nicholas), 10 great grandchildren (and counting), and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jean Joanne (Fuchs) Stein, his parents, Edna and John Stein and his sisters, Audrey Ponge and Joan Simms.
