Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 19, 1956, he was the cherished son of the late John A. Dugan Jr. and Mary (Carpenter) Dugan and his beloved brother late Michael J. Dugan. Joseph, known affectionately as “Joe”, was a devoted husband, father, friend and athlete with a kind heart and a great sense of humor. He took care of the people he loved and was a beacon of strength.
Joe attended Saint Dorothy Grade School in Drexel, PA and Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, PA. Upon graduation, he was awarded a full athletic scholarship for football to Temple University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Joe Dugan was a man who loved people. Following college, he moved to Florida and worked as a bartender at a “Philly” bar called the Parrot Lounge for many years. He later pursued a successful career in Food Service Sales and Management with Sysco and retired from Kraft/Heinz. Despite his professional achievements, Joe continued bartending on Tuesdays because he loved the camaraderie and as he used to say he liked having cash in his pocket.
He loved his family, friends, golf and his scooter or his “motorcycle” as he would call it. When he was not golfing, he was either taking his wife on scooter dates, hanging out with his family or stopping by the local watering holes to see one of his many friends. Joe had so many friends that kept in touch all the time starting from back in grade school through adulthood and he cherished them all. Joe not only loved his kids but all their friends. He spent many years coaching the local basketball teams “Boca Hoops” for both kids. Once his kids went to Pope John Paul II High School, he continued coaching the boys’ basketball team, as well as the football team. Joe and Bonnie have been very fortunate to have traveled all over the world while always making friends along the way. Joseph Dugan was truly one of the greats. His joyful charisma and genuine love for people will be deeply missed.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Lee; his son Joseph Michael Jr. (Joey) and his wife Nichole Brooke (Nicki) and their soon-to-be-born child; his daughter, Janielle Mary Elizabeth; his siblings, Margaret Mary, Suzanne (Dave), Jack (Jane), James (Denise), Marianne (Greg) and Theresa (Gary) and his sister-in-law Elizabeth and his many nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025, from 5pm to 8pm at Babione Funeral Home 1100 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL. The services will be Thursday, February 6th, 2025, at 11am at St. Joan of Arc Church 370 SW 3rd St., Boca Raton, FL. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton.
