I'm sad to just hear of Chris passing. We had lost touch with each other after high school and I took for granted he would always be around. I wish I had taken the time to let him know how very dear he was to me. 

We attended high school together and shared many of the same classes. He was an awesome tuba player in the SBHS band. If I remember correctly, he also earned the distinguished privilege of playing in the All-State Band.  And...I would never have passed Mrs. Poe's Advanced Math class without Chris helping me daily while riding the school bus. Around school we affectionately called him "Mr. Kotter" after the popular sitcom of the late 70's, Welcome Back, Kotter, because Chris resembled the character so much with his dark, curly hair and moustache. 

I enjoyed our time together, playing cards on the bus and field trips for band functions, and I appreciate beyond measure, how he helped me, another shy person, to make it through the stress of those high school days. I remember fondly his beautiful smile and those rosy cheeks. Even though this is a year or more late in posting, I couldn't let this opportunity go by without honoring Chris with a few words. You touched my life, dear friend.

I can't believe it has been a year since we lost Chris.  Always so nice and helpful.  2022 was a time of loss for many.  May we all appreciate life and each other.  God Bless

I was shocked and saddened to learn that Chris had passed away, I had seen him a few days earlier when he came into the OLLI office to work his magic on an IT problem. He was such a sweet, kind person and looked after all our office plants without needing to be asked while we all worked from home for a few months. I have a lovely African Violet on my kitchen window sill that is blooming now thanks to Chris's advice on how to care for it. I will think of him every time I look at it. He will be greatly missed by all the McKimmon Center staff. My condolences to his family. 


Chris (and his supervisor at the time) interviewed me for this job back in late-2000 and has been in the office next to mine for over 21 years. I could see from the start how well-respected he was here at McKimmon and I have always strived to live up to that standard. His technical knowledge was definitely on a higher plane than mine, but I learned so much from him over the years and will miss learning more. While I wasn't into hockey, I still listened to his rants and raves about the Canes. We did have plenty of quality conversations about the Wolfpack, movies, concerts, comics, fantasy football, and family over the years and I will miss those immensely. It's going to take a while to process that I can't just pop over to his office door to stick my head in and pick his brain about whatever random tech issue has perplexed me. I never heard anyone speak ill of Chris and I think all these tributes posted here are testament to that. My most sincere condolences to his mother and sister and my best wishes for peace and healing to all of us.

Chris and I worked together for my entire career span of 24 years with the McKimmon Center.  I would call him with a question and while still on the phone telling him my issue, he would be behind me looking over my shoulder figuring out what I did wrong.  I would tell him he was like Houdini.  I never heard him come into my office or leave the office.  I realize he was a Cane's, NCSU, and bird lover fan,  but let's not forget his green thumb. Chris had a knack with African violets and any other type of house plant.  He had the gentlest demeanor and even after my retirement in 2013 I still have reached out to him about Cane tickets (3 weeks before his passing) or some computer advice.  I know he regretted ever giving me his cell phone number.  We had many great trips to St. Louis for the Ungerboeck Conferences over the years and honestly the McKimmon Center wouldn't be the successful state of the art facility without his advice, input and dedication to assuring everything went as scheduled. I worked with Chris for the past 23 years. He was always able to solve whatever problem I threw his way.  As a fellow Canes fan, most of our talks revolved around the Hurricanes or fantasy football. I will miss his dry wit and his guidance. 

I worked with Chris for the last 17 years. I will definitely miss him.   I will miss hearing him threatening to throw the computer out of the window too!  Chris’ office was adjacent to mine and from time to time we would have wall knocks with each other. I must say, every year I would send him a happy birthday email and this was the first year, I did not receive a response from him which was kind of odd but I didn’t think too hard about it. I have been so fortunate, Chris was one of my computer consultants at McKimmon. He was so freaking smart, shy, and he would crack me up too!  Chris could put a hurting on some peanut brittle (this means it was delicious). My condolences to his family and friends. Gone too soon, rest easy Labrie.  Missed, but I will never forget you. Go Hurricanes!

I have worked with Chris for the last 10 years and he was always kind and patient with everyone he worked with and with my computer until he got ready "to throw it out the window!"  He was so funny and his dry sense of humor always cracked me up while he sat there and didn't crack a smile.  His passing came as such a shock and he will be sorely missed.  Sending my heartfelt sympathies to all of his friends and family. 

I had the privilege of working with Chris for many years at NCSU. He was great at his job, loved fishing, the ‘Canes and made the best peanut brittle in the universe. He was a shy and kind friend and I will miss him.

I worked with Chris for six years at McKimmon some time ago.  I was lucky that my office was right beside of his, because he was always there to help when I needed him.  He was so patient with us and certainly had that magic touch to fix whatever was wrong.  Chris and I liked trying to call into the radio stations to attempt to win tickets or prizes, so we would let each other know when it was time to call.  He was a wonderful soul and I am so glad I had the chance to work with him.  I, too, hope he knew how much everyone thought of him and appreciated him.  God bless you, Chris.   - Tracie Matthews

I’m another former coworker- worked with Chris for almost 23 years.  I won’t mention how he was an IT genius, even though he was. My favorite thing about Chris was his kindness. I never heard him say a bad thing about anyone. He was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He went out of his way to be helpful. One of the other posters mentioned that they didn’t think Chris was aware of how many friends he had. I agree. I hope it gives his family some comfort knowing that he was very special to a lot of people. He was one of very few people I enjoyed chitchatting with. I’ll miss him. My prayers are with his friends and family.  

I too have known Chris for many years as part of the "McKimmon Center Family".  He was a kind, helpful, highly valuable and 
respected member of the McKimmon family.

He made many great contributions to NC State University through his knowledge and expertise in computer technology.

To the family, so sorry for your loss. Chris was such a good guy and always so helpful. I recall when we worked together we would both get excited for girl scout cookie time. He was the 1st person to tell me about putting them in the freezer.

Chris was a delightful and kind person and I enjoyed working with him over the last 9 years.  In his quiet and unsuspecting way, he could fix anything computer related and never actually had to 'throw it out the window'!  You will be missed dear Chris.  My deepest sympathies to Chris's family for your loss.

Chris and I worked together for about 27 years until I moved on almost a year ago.  Throughout our careers together, I was in awe of his intellect.  There was noting about a computer or about computer programming that Chris did not understand.  I learned a lot from him over the years:  how to troubleshoot and become more self-sufficient in solving my on computer issues.  Chris was someone who had a beautiful mind and put his talents to use every day.

I am as shocked and saddened as others Chris knew and worked with.  His legacy will be how he advanced the McKimmon Conference and Training Center for over thirty years.  Chris provided valuable advice to administrators on how McKimmon should move forward and it did under his leadership.

One source of pride I have is being only one of two individuals on earth that could get Chris to wear a tie (the photo among these tributes).  The only other person was his mother, whom he loved greatly and spoke of fondly.

Chris was  introverted  but very kind.  He may have not been the type of person to initiate a conversation but if you engaged him in conversation, especially about his job and other interest, he would talk all day.

I enjoyed my conversations with him.  Over the years our roles changed and he reported to me for several years.  Regardless, we were the same individuals to each other.  Chris confided in me, I believe, because we understood each other.

I do wish that Chris' last year of work at McKimmon would have been less stressful.  Chris deserved to be treated with the respect that he gave others.  His kind treatment of other people will be one of the things Chris will be remembered for.  Another was his patience.  In the last year, he did not receive the same level of respect that he gave others but Chris was the stronger person.  I will always remember that of him.

Here's to a job and a life well done.  Please rest knowing that.  My life is better for knowing you.

I have known you for nearly 29 years. With your periodically irritating sister, the ❤️  of my life, I ALWAYS Enjoyed your verbal spats and picking on each other… I am certain a synonymous continuation from your childhoods.

Your brother-in-law is devastated to your loss, Chris. You mentioned something to me in November in my kitchen… Before Thanksgiving… I responded to you… As I reflect, I wonder if you knew more than what you shared.
Most difficult, over the years you have been the dependable, silly, bird-feeding and loving foster parent of The Mong, Pootie, Ferg, Rushmoor and…. Your favorite… Brunswick! In particular, Brunswick is as sad as the rest of us you warmly touched over the years!

Dearest Chris, perhaps we ALL Can steal a bit away from you in your easy ways and quiet approach to Life. Your “water off a duck’s back“ was remarkable. Your other family, McKimmon  family, you brother have left enormous gaps in a many of lives. 
In particular, thank you for being there for me in November in lieu of your sister. Indeed, we shared a lot of late and I am so grateful we did. So grateful.
As tears drip across my cheeks, let me say you lived an honorable life. Despite being stripped of a father in your life at such an early age… You brother evolved to be a wonderful man and loving son to Mama.

I’ve known Chris for over 40 years. I remember when he was a student at NCSU and worked for the ‘set up crew’ at the McKimmon Center and then he became a full-time employee.  Chris was always willing to help with any computer problem.  When my computer would have a ‘malfunction’ and I could not figure out I would call him and of course he always came.  Seemed like all he had to do was sit down at my desk and the computer was fixed.  I would ask ‘ok what did you do’ and he’s just kind of wave his hand over the keyboard and grin.  I would tell him he had the magic touch.  I’m not sure Chris realized how many lives he touched and how many friends he had.  He was definitely a big part of the McKimmon Family and will be missed.  Our birthdays are a few weeks apart but I’m 11 months older than him.  I know on his birthday I would always tease him that he’s caught up with me now and he would smile.  I enjoyed conversations I had with him and admired him for his knowledge and willingness to help.    Chris will be missed by so many.  Prayers for peace and comfort to Chris’s family today and in the days to come.

I worked with Chris at NC State for almost 19 years; Chris was our go-to guy for any IT-related problem.  He was incredibly knowledgeable, and always willing to help resolve issues. Chris was one of the least pretentious people I have ever known. Very courteous,  polite, super accommodating to every!
He was very private but would open up to those really spent time with him.  He will be missed!

To Chris's family, he was a dedicated employee of NC State University and McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education    (MCE&CE). He served in multiple capacities within our division over the years.  Chris was the "go to guy" for computer related issues, responding immediately to your requests and resolving whatever the issue (s)  might be.  I enjoyed short conversations with Chris through the years and was especially thrilled when he would smile at the end our conversation.  I send prayers for peace and sympathy.   Alice S. My heart is broken for Chris' family and friends. Chris was a good guy. I really appreciated his IT support especially when he thought the appropriate fix would be to throw it out the window! We shared a love of amaryllis plants and he grew some beautiful ones. When I see one I will always remember Chris fondly. 

Chris was a very nice man and hated to tell what his secrets were in fixing your computer. He would always come when called to help with any computer problems even if it wasn’t part of his equipment.  He was a very kind person.

Chris and I worked together at NCSU for many years. He was quiet, so I especially loved when I could get him to talk about television, music, or his beloved Canes. I ran into him recently and we had such a nice visit. He will be so missed by the McKimmon family. My prayers are with his family and all of his loved ones.

Was so shocked to hear of Chris passing.  I worked with him for 18 years.   He was wonderful and always  willing to help.   All my stupid computer mistakes.    He never voiced what he was really thinking ! and wanted to say.   He was the same all the  time  .   He always just fixed it!  You were a great coworker!! Rest in Peace Chris !!

I worked with Chris for 10 year, what a wonderful, kind man.  He will be greatly missed!!!!  My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Chris has been a member of our Fantasy Football league for almost 20 years.  He's a steady, courteous dude who always fielded a good team and was a good sport, win or lose.  We'll all miss him, and I know we won't get somebody near as excellent a competitor and person in his place .
