

Mr. Champion was born in Franklin County, NC on January 28, 1936 and was the son of the late Vance and Annie Perry Champion. Wink was a resident of Rolesville, North Carolina until 1984 when he moved to Varnamtown. While in Rolesville, he was a member of the Lions Club for 20 years and also served as a Town Commissioner. He also worked for S&W Chevrolet for 21 years. After moving to Brunswick County, he was the Maintenance Supervisor for the Town of Shallotte for 22 years and a faithful member of Dixon Chapel Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Betty B. Champion of the home; a son Danny Kaye Champion and wife Chandee of Clinton, NC; two grandchildren, Wesley Vance Champion of Supply and Holden Reece Champion and wife April of Dunn, NC; a great grandchild, whom he longed to hold, Oakley Scott Champion. Wink was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
He loved being outdoors and riding his golf cart, tractor, and lawn mower. He took pride in his yard and was often seen raking leaves, acorns or watering the grass by hand. His favorite spot was by the river where he enjoyed cookouts with friends. This was commonly known to everyone as “Wink’s Park.”
Funeral services will be held Monday July 1, 2024 at eleven o’clock in the morning at Dixon Chapel Methodist Church with Reverend J.B. Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Strickland, Darron Edens, Randy Stevenson, Jeremy Hewett, Jay Howard Robinson, and Jason Walters.
Honorary pallbearers will be Nicky Varnam, Henry Butler, Kenny Hewett, Gary Galloway, Harold Dacus, and Pete Cosgrave.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
