Jim was born June 20, 1941 in Charlotte, NC, a son of the late James M. Payne, Sr, and Desiree Marshall Payne.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1979 after serving 22 years as a MSGT E7. He owned TNT Leather Company in Charlotte, and in 1998 moved the business to Shallotte, NC, where he retired in 2002. He was a Shriner and a Mason, member of Long Creek Lodge 205 in Huntersville, NC .
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Rosemary S. Payne, one brother; Ronald L. Payne, two sons; Dale Wilson Payne, and David Ward Payne, one daughter; Tina Hopkins Jones, grandchildren Katie Jones, Taylor and Matthew Payne, and Addison and Connor Powers, two stepchildren; Stephanie Phillips and Jeffery Trimmer.
A memorial service will be held a later date to be announced.
