Memories from a Grandchild

As Randy Travis sang, Will the circle be unbroken, the family chain?  I say, no the chain will not be broken, even though you are not here with us, Grandma.  Your spirit and memories live on through our family and the love you shared and taught us with continue to grow within our family chain.  Our family circle will keep growing.  You planted the seed of love from your beautiful garden into our family.  Its roots grow deep and will continue to grow.

Grandma, you always had a way of making one feel that you have been waiting to see just them all day.

I remember as a child, you and Grandpa taking us grandchildren on special trips to Wilmington to see a movie, shopping, and McDonalds.  Whether it was Star Wars, the Muppets, or Flash Gordon you and Grandpa made it a magical evening.  I remember the rides home at night with us looking out of the car window gazing at the stars with you telling us stories of heaven and us thinking of aliens or storm troopers.  Watching movies and playing in the back seat at night on the way home, was so much fun. 
   
But not as much fun as our sleepovers.  You taught us how to play gin rummy.  We would sip on sparking grape juice and play cards all night long into the wee hours.  When it was time to curl up in bed, you would tell of us ghost stories of Jo Baldwin haunting the railroad tracks in Leland and the scariest of all was how Bigfoot, wanted his big toe.  He had lost it in our potato garden and we had took it home with all the potatoes in a sack and he wanted it back!  We would scream each time you told us that story and we can still hear you sayI want my big toeeeee.  And who could forget the soothing sound and cool air of the big fan in your bedroom window which would put us to sleep.  Or the sound of raindrops or classical music on your radio.

Weekends and playtime at Grandma and Grandpa's was the meeting point, the circle that brought the family together.  Especially for us grandkidswhich meant playtime.  Adventures playing in the woods, sneaking and playing in your huge greenhouse (which was had many plants of different varieties creating a magical land), building forts and houses, celebrating birthdays, sharing toys, games, and a trip to the candy store.  We all loved the outdoors, thanks to our grandparents and parents.  I remember us begging and crying wanting to spend nights at your house just so we could play and be spoiled by you both.  Whether it was them making their special peanut butter candy or pampering us when we got hurt or when we were sad.Grandma knew just how to fix it!  And she would voice it loud if she needed too!

As kids, we all would call Grandma, upset with our parents.  Whether it was them not letting us do something we shouldn't be doing or punishing us which we didn't agree with.  All we had to do was cry, tell Grandma what happened, and she would say so soft but stern.Twin (she had nicknames for each of us), let me speak to your mom, I will get after them.  I would hand the phone over to them thinking Grandma was gonna lay it into them now!  Mom would answer Grandma yes, umm hum.  I not knowing but as a mom now and much older, more likely they were probably taking about something other than us.  Grandma just had a way of handling things and our parents.  Grandmas are meant to spoil us, like I said, Grandma is mom with lots of frosting!! 

Grandma, we all cannot forget your love for flowers and plants.  Your gardens were so beautiful and would cause pass byers on Hwy 17 to stop and beg for a clipping.  Your Lilly garden, azaleas, roses, bridal bushes, trumpet plants, bird of paradise, and many others were Mother Nature's seeds from heaven above.  We've never seen a lily garden as beautiful as yours and Grandpas.  So big and colorful.  You both were so proud and worked hard.  Your greenhouse was so much fun to play in.  Exploring and seeing all the different kinds of plants growing and flourishing by your nurturing hands along with the sound of classical music playing in the background.  You had a gift for Mother Nature's beauty and God's hand of nurture.  Even as a child and adult, we never left your house without a bouquet of beautiful flowers or clippings to plant.  Wherever we were living, you were with us.  Clippings and plants dug up from your yard still grow and bloom till this day, in our yards.  

Grandma, we'll always remember that special smile, that laughter, that caring heart, that warm, embrace, you always gave us.  As we walked through the doors of your house you greeted us with that big bright smile and laughter!  Calling our names out with happiness glowing in your eyes.  Reaching out for that warm embrace hugging us so tightly.  
You have been there for all of us through good and bad times, no matter what.  Praying for us and our children, wishing the best and nothing less.

We'll always remember you, Grandma, because there will never be another one to replace you in our heartsand the love we will always have for you.  You are now in Heaven with your loving husband and sweetheart, Grandpa; your son Danny, your daughter Ginger, and granddaughter Deana.  All Angels above watching over us.  Like the Footprints of God in the sand; you will be our Angel walking with us.
