

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Deni Sayre, 88, of Bonita, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2011. Deni was born March 22, 1923 to Roy Nix and Pink Doty in Mississippi. She was raised in Michigan with two sisters, Estelle and Grace. She attended and graduated from Flint Central High School in 1941.
She married her first husband, Harry Fred Jurjens at Adams Memorial Chapel in Norfolk, VA. The couple was later blessed with three daughters, Sheryll, Susan and Cynthia. She and her family would later move to San Diego in 1955. After Harry passed away, Deni went to college and graduated from San Diego State University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Deni was an active volunteer with the National City Girls Club for many years. She was a member of the Southwest Lions Club, first as a Lioness and then she was one of the first women to actually become a Lion in the south bay club. She received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award and served as the Club’s secretary for a number of years.
Deni belonged to the Sweetwater Women’s Club for over 50 years. She participated in many of the events, including the annual Holiday Home Show. She and her late husband, George Sayre whom she married in 1974, were members of the Chula Vista Democratic Club and the Sierra Club, championing many environmental causes.
Some of Deni’s favorite pastimes included gardening, traveling, reading and crocheting.
Deni is survived by her sister, Grace Batten of Michigan; daughters Sherry Hatch, Sue Kraft, and Cindy Hansen; grandchildren Melinda, Jay, Angi, Frances, Jeff, Jennifer; 22 great grandchildren; and 8 great, great grandchildren
Services will be held September 1, 2011, at The Little Chapel of Roses of Glen Abbey Memorial Park and Mortuary, at 11:30 am. Viewing begins at 9:30 am. Interment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery with her first husband, Harry.
