Alex at the age of 70 passed away in National City, California on Saturday, August 24, 2024. He was born on January 28,1954 in Calasiao, Philippines to the parents of Antonina Guarin Kinghorn and Quirino Guarin. He is the eldest of seven siblings. He has two brothers and four sisters.
Alex was the backbone, the patriarch of his whole extended family. He was the vital person to petition and migrate them all to the United States in 1979 thru 2009. He considered this as one of his greatest accomplishments.
Alex was a hard worker and very determined, he joined the Navy in 1974 at the age of eighteen. He proudly served in the Navy for 26 years as a ship boilerman engineer. In his career he became the most senior enlisted member of the Navy and was commissioned to “Master Chief” Petty Officer. After retiring he continued to grow and went on to work as a beloved high school teacher for the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) for 10 years. He helped students develop leadership skills and complete the overall trainings in the Navy.
Alex was an all around person: handyman, gardener, mechanic, fisherman and chef. Always fixed things for his family and friends when they asked. Built gardens of his favorite vegetables, fruits and flowers around his home. He fixed and remodeled cars. He enjoyed fishing and sharing his catches of the day. Alex loved to cook for his family especially every Wednesday for their family dinners.
Above all, Alex loved his family. He sacrificed a lot to give his family more than he ever had. Loving husband to Olivia who he met and married in 1977. On every wedding anniversary he gave her red roses. They had their first daughter Mary Ann in 1978, second daughter Marites in 1981. Lastly, his son Alvin in 1985. Also adopted their niece, Danette in 1992. His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren-Brayden, Jonah, Zerah, Tristen, Liam, Alex II, and Ella. He was the all around “Papa” with babysitting, school pickups, meal deliveries, and even provided them allowances each week. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them.
Alex will be greatly missed. He leaves a legacy of accomplishments, love, and most importantly family. His legacy will live on and never be forgotten.
