I met Al 4.5 years ago in the Imperial Beach Commissary parking lot. We chatted and I learned he had recently lost his wife, Willie. Willie and my mother were buried in the same cemetery, so we met there often. He shared beautiful memories of his beloved wife and his 5 children. He was a proud Navy man who retired and went on to become an Aerospace Engineer and received many prestigious accolades. He shared pictures of his travels with Willie in his RV and pictures of his beautiful grandchildren. He was a proud husband, father, and grandfather. We spoke on the phone almost every day for the last 4.5 years at 8pm and I especially miss our daily check-ins. He inspired me in so many ways! Thank you for your friendship, Al. I miss you but I know you are alongside your beautiful wife. I picture you two jitterbugging in the heavens above. Until we meet again! Love you – Irma Estrada

We met Al after moving into the neighborhood in 2010. We’re a Military family and my husband was deployed often. Al and Willie were often outside where we would chat while my kids would play. This grew into an amazing friendship and I will forever cherish both of them. I’ve learned a lot from Al and his stories were the best! He was such a blessing to our family and I will forever be grateful ❤️ Rest easy Al!

Al was our beloved neighbor for over 20 years. We bonded because we are both Portuguese and he was my parents age, but grew to be great friends. We will miss him, but we know he is now with the love of his life, Willie, in heaven.
