Madison Family,
I was a Silver Wing student in the late 1970s and  was recently reminiscing on my elementary school-years.  As an adult looking back, I admire the great group of teachers that I had each year and am certain that Dr. Madison, in his very soft-spoken and gentle manner was a great influence on how well the teachers taught and the high standards set on us as students.  I still remember sitting on the rug as a kindergartener and looking up at Dr. Madison in his  nicely pressed suit and shiny shoes when he visited our classroom to say hello.  Even as a kindergartener, I knew he was an admirable and kind man.  I am sorry for your loss and want you to know that his memory lives on in his students.

Al gave me my first job in public schools. He believed in me and gave me confidence in myself. He adored Mark. I remember his principal's newsletter, where he wrote about playing ball with Mark. Al was soft spoken and gentle. He was very kind to me, and I looked up to him, and admired his dedication to his family. I will never forget Al Madison. Vera, would you contact me?

I have recently moved back to San Diego and was "googling" names of people I worked with in Chula Vista.  I was sad to see "Dr. Madison's" obituary.  He hired me in my first position as a speech therapist in 1979.  I learned a lot from both of you over my years in CVESD.  Dr. Madison held very high standards for his staff and had a knack for hiring leaders.  As I look back on his staff at Silver Wing, so many have gone on to key positions in CVESD and elsewhere.  I appreciated his serious, yet supportinve attitude.  

I am sure you miss him greatly.

Dr. Madison was one of the best educators I have ever had. He cared so much about his students, and for their progress in academics. I feel so fortunate to have known such a great human being. I wish I could have visited him after I left Silver Wing to thank him for everything he's done, and for the impact he made on my life. Thank you Dr. Madison, for everything. I will never forget you.

4th Grade Class, Silverwing, '98-'99.

Dr. Alfred Madison's childhood story is one about "Going Against the Odds and Winning."  We thank God for Alfred.  Our mother, a widow, could frequently be heard saying, "get a college education."  Sharing an excerpt from Alfred's life, a life that was filled with accomplishments.  In high school Alfred was elected to represent the 9th and 10th grade classes as a member of the student council, was a member of the National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, Key Club, Letterman's Club, co-captain of the football team, was in Who's Who and was elected Vice President of the senior class..  Alfred, from a modest beginning, navigated all the difficulties, barriers, discouragements, and focused on achieving.  We thank God for Alfred's success.

Dear Vera, Mark and Vanessa,
Just today we were told that you have lost your husband and father Al.  Our son played soccer with Mark many years ago and they have remained friends since then. Even after  our son left for college and we all moved from Chula Vista to San Diego and then on to Houston, Texas a couple of years ago they communicated. We remember Al as the gentleman who quietly sat in his lawn chair at the soccer matches and provided support to all of the boys on the field. Later I discovered that he was quite accomplished as an educator and that he also held a PHD.  We did not have an opportunity to interact beyond those soccer days but our boys did and we were always comfortable when our son told us he was with Al and Vera’s son Mark. We are just so saddened to learn that another one of the good guys is now gone. But we all know that he was a huge contributor to children’s lives here on earth and without any doubt at all we know that he will be a huge contributor in heaven as well. May God be with the Madison family always.

My prayers go out to the Madison family, and I can still recall the announcer at the football games calling out a pass competion Madison to Madison. that was pas from Alfred to Oscar. We send our condolences to Oscar,Thelma,Peggy,and Alfred's family

My prayers are with the Madison Family. Although I did not have a relationship with Alfred, I knew him through sports and attended classes with his sisters, I found all to be caring, kind persons.

Thank you aunt Vera for being a wonderful aunt. We send our love to you and my cousins during this very sad time. I will miss uncle Alfred showing up on a surprise visit and sharing family reunions with him. My father throughout my life told stories of all the memories he and uncle Alfred shared. My father and I miss his brother and share with you your great loss. I'll always remember my uncle as a man of dignity, who commanded respect and had a certain presence about him. In life we get so busy that we overlook gifts that are here with us and I want to take this time to say we love you Aunt Vera, Mark, Vanessa, Darlene, Denise and all my cousins.

As principal of Silver Wing Elementary School I had the privilege of visiting Al's 4th grade classroom nearly every day for ten years.  Al cared greatly for his students and he took personal responsibility for their behavior and academic progress.  Reflecting on Al's work with our students at Silver Wing reminds me that when we leave this life we will not take our wealth with us, nor our fancy cars or clothes, not even our nice watches or jewelry.  All this gets left behind.  But, what we do take with us is our legacy, the good we did while we were on God's green earth. Al leaves behind a long legacy of love for the children that he worked with in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.  He made a difference in their lives and our Father in Heaven will remember that.  God bless you, Al. It was a privilege having you as member of my staff at Silver Wing.

I am one of Al's nephews.  Al Madison was truly a wonderful human being.  He excelled in his athletic endeavors in his earlier years and he excelled in his long and distinguished career in the education field.  He helped raise great children of his own and he was and will always be greatly loved by his many family members.  Rest in peace, Al.  We love you and we'll miss you.

What a wonderful guy Al Madison was.  I remember him from Yuma Union High School, where he was always a leader and a friend to all. Please accept my condolences for your great loss.

My fondest memories are of Alfred's mother, Irene, who was best friends with my mother. Irene was an elegant, humble   and disciplined head of household who loved her chidren and guided them to exceptional professional and personal accomplishments. Irene was a prominent part of our family. Alfred's father worked for my father, at Butler Roofing. He too is remembered as a hard worker and dependable  hand. The tributes to  Alfred, as a kind and caring teacher and administrator, directly reflect his parents as I knew them. This family, in my opinion, is an excellent example of "Barrier Breaking" in America: humble beginnings ... outstanding accomplishments. Thank you Alfred for being everything your parents, teachers and fellow Crims could have hoped and prayed for.

By the way, Al was my uncle. His wife Vera is my Dad's (Dick Schroeder) brother. Uncle Al's legacy will be the amazing children he raised with Vera, along with the hundreds of others he helped guide. We love you Madison.

This is from all the people that knew Al during his Cal Western days.  Everyone that knew Al from his football days thru all of his endeavors in college, remember Al as a true class person, excellent football player, and someone to be fortunate to have known as a friend...I was a Frosh basketball player just trying to find my way, and Al would always ask me how I was doing...Man, a senior looking out for my best interest, how could that be...but that was the person that Al was. I attended Silverwing Elementary in the 80's where Dr. Madison was the principal for all of my elementary school years. I always remember his smile and how proud he was of all the students.  I was constantly in the nurses office due to regular nose bleeds and he would always come in and check on me. He was very involved in all of the school activities and I felt safe knowing he was around. He will be trully missed and remembered as the best principal ever. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I started working for the Chula Vista School District forty years ago.  Al was so nice to me, soft spoken, and always looked like he stepped out of GQ.  I will always remember his kindness to me.  He was a true professional and one of the greatest class acts of all time.

Good morning,  I am Jack Phillips, a classmate from YUHS that lives here in San Diego. Al and I went to school together in Yuma, gradeschool and High School.  What a decent, talented and class guy he was.........So sorry to hear of his passing.
