He was born to Clarence and Cecelia Smith in Mound Township, IL. He worked for Rohr Aircraft in Chula Vista as a Welder and retired in 1991. His interests included stock car races, fishing, hunting, traveling in his motorhome and tinkering in his workshop.
He is survived by his loving wife Bettie, of 69 years, daughters Susan (Jeff) Lewen of Hemet, Sandra (Steve) Painter of Hemet, Barbara (Ray) Hawley of Chula Vista, and Patricia Smith of Hemet.
He dearly loved his 7 grandchildren, Elizabeth(Brian) Davis, Jeffrey (Veronica) Lewen Jr., Josh(Courtney) Painter, Mark(Stephanie) Lewen, Christopher Painter, Pamela(Sean)Simpson, Angela Hawley and 9 great-grandchildren, Reggie, Andrew, Chloe, Elijah, Noah, Kevin, Isabella, Madison and Kenzie.
He is also survived by his sister Marcia (Owen) Miller of Lewistown, IL and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Ronald Smith of Shelbyville, IN.
