It is with both sadness and fond remembrance that we share the passing of Eric Jason Cara Esperon, a vibrant soul who spent his life brightening the world around him. Eric, aged 51, of National City, California, left us on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his beloved home. Born on June 15, 1974, in the bustling heart of Manhattan, New York, he was the cherished son of Efrain and Nilda (Cara) Esperon.
For over two decades, Eric poured his heart and soul into the Sweetwater Union High School community—Go Red Devils!—where he ignited a passion for learning in countless students. His teaching spanned a range of subjects, including American History, Filipino American History, Government, and Economics. However, his influence extended beyond the classroom, as he also served as an Assistant Coach for the Academic Decathlon and played advisory roles in impactful programs such as the Health Academy, Mock Trial, Paranormal Club, and Welding.
Eric's warm spirit shone through his many interests and passions. He reveled in the excitement of the San Diego Comic Convention every year, cheered passionately for the San Diego Gulls hockey team, and enjoyed the enchanting thrills of Disneyland and Knott's Scary Farm in October. A proud alumnus of the University of Southern California (Fight on, Beat LA!), Eric's enthusiasm was contagious, especially when it came to his deep love for Star Wars and the Halloween season. His extensive collection of comic books and action figures was a testament to his playful nature, but nothing brought him more joy than the time he spent surrounded by family and friends. Eric was truly a "Big Kid at Heart," and his goofy dad jokes, radiant smile, and unwavering optimism made him a beloved figure among students and faculty alike. His generous spirit was always evident, as he readily offered help or shared meals with those in need.
Eric's unique blend of diverse interests and amiable personality was a powerful force that brought people together, creating a strong, supportive community. His remarkable ability to unite various social circles was one of Eric's greatest gifts, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who were part of this community.
He leaves behind his wonderful mother, Nilda Cara Esperon of National City, CA, and his loving sister, Robin Cara Esperon of Moultrie, GA, along with an extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews across California, New Jersey, Ohio, and Virginia. Eric was preceded in death by his father, Efrain Deminia Esperon.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Eric's remarkable life at a Celebration of Life service, a time for sharing memories and stories, held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in the Magnolia Room at Glen Abbey Mortuary, located at 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, California. A funeral service followed will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, in the Magnolia Room, culminating in a heartfelt procession to the gravesite.
In honor of Eric's remarkable spirit and love for costumes, the family encourages everyone to dress up for the Celebration of Life service, just as he loved to do at Comic Con. They also invite you to plant something beautiful in his memory, allowing his legacy to continue growing in our hearts and in our world.
