Henry Mapanao Chan, age 91, passed away peacefully in San Diego, California, on Sunday, May 4, 2025. He was born on June 2, 1933, in Aringay, La Union, Philippines, to Sixto Chan, Sr. and Apolonia Mapanao.
Henry proudly served in the United States Navy, where he began his career as a steward and later transitioned to become an Engineman aboard diesel submarines. He earned the privilege of wearing his “Dolphins” — the insignia of a qualified submariner — while holding the rank of Seaman, a distinction he wore with great pride. Over the course of his service, Henry rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E7), retiring after 21 years of honorable and dedicated duty. Among the many vessels he served on, the USS Grayback (SS-574) held a special place in his heart. The camaraderie he shared with his fellow crewmembers was deeply meaningful, and he made it a point to attend their annual reunions whenever possible, cherishing the time spent with his old shipmates and their families.
Henry was one of eight siblings, born fourth in line. He is survived by his sisters Virginia Chan Arcega, Mercedes Chan Dionida, and Clarita Chan Angeles. He was predeceased by his brothers Isabelo, Sixto Jr., Eulogio, and Nemesio.
He was also predeceased by his beloved first wife of 45 years, Manuela “Nellie” B. Chan. He is lovingly remembered by his sons, Ty Chan and his wife Gretchen, and Victor Chan and his wife Michelle; his cherished grandchildren, Gabriel, Chandler, Sarah, Serenah, Elijah, and Dorian; his adored great-grandsons, Theodore “Theo” and Mateo; and his wife, Irma Chan, who was with him in his later years.
Henry will be remembered for his quiet strength, steadfast loyalty, and deep devotion to his family and country. His legacy lives on in the lives of those he touched — a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, faithful sailor, and a man of enduring honor.
“Fair winds and following seas, Chief. Your watch is over — we have the helm.”
