Mrs. Jannie Yvonne Patterson
Known by many as Mother Patterson
Sunrise August 26, 1940
Sunset February 06, 2025
Born the youngest of nine children in Opelika, AL, to Paul and Hettie Ann Melton, Jannie was affectionately known as Tutter due to her brother Satin being unable to say sister. It was during this time that she dedicated her life to Christ at the Nazareth Baptist Church. In later years, Jannie met and fell in love with Lloyd James Patterson. The couple jumped the broom and married in January of 1958. That September, she gave birth to their eldest daughter, Bobbie Ann, in Opelika. Due to her husband’s military career, Jannie and Bobbie eventually moved to Merced, CA, living with her sister Marie Jones. It would be during this time that the couple welcomed their youngest daughter, Jacqueline, to the world in 1961.
Lloyd was eventually honorably discharged from the Army and enlisted in the US Navy, which led him and his family to Coronado, CA, in 1964. It was during this time that Jannie began her journey as a domestic housekeeper, first for residents and then eventually at the world-famous Hotel Del Coronado. Due to the travel demands of Lloyd’s military career, the family lived everywhere from Virginia Beach to Long Beach, Oxnard, and Oceanside, California, to name a few, always taking the transitions in stride. God eventually used these transitions to launch Jannie's career with the Navy Exchange. In 1972, Lloyd was transferred to San Diego, and the Patterson’s bought their first home, a beautiful house on Noeline Place, sitting up on a hill that overlooked the city. Jannie spent her time there being known for her generosity and ample supply of everything. After 32 years of service, she retired from the Navy Exchange as a supervisor.
Her next chapter of life included help raising her three grandchildren, Sharunne, Harold, and Jonte. Later in life, Jannie earned the title of Mother Patterson. Her faith and community were very important to her. She organized numerous events, including the State Rally, Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Back to School Events, and more. With her love for cooking, Mother Patterson made sure any and every event had a meal and one of her famous pies. After 50 years in San Diego, she would again move in May 2022 to Fontana, CA, with Bobbie to do what she truly loved the most: help raise her three great grandsons, Xavier, Logan, and Gavin Foster. Jannie is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Hettie Melton; husband, Lloyd Patterson; brothers, Willie Lee, Walter, Benjamin, and Paul Melton, Jr.; sisters Dorothy Johnson and Francis Allen; and great-granddaughter Olivia Foster. Jannie leaves to cherish her memories with her children, Bobbie and Jacqueline, grandchildren: the Honorable Sharunne Foster (Milton), Harold, and Jonte, three great-grandchildren, Xavier, Logan, and Gavin Foster, along with two remaining siblings, Marie Jones and Arthur Melton (Beatrice) and a host of family and friends.
