Our mamang Lydia Crescini Misenas was born on October 23,1923 in Cavite City, Philippines. The city of joy that even in her intensive care unit bed, she proudly sung “Caviteno Soy” more than once. She grew up with a strong belief in the Catholic Church taught by her deceased parents Jose or lolo Joe and Francisca or lola Kikay. In her youthful years, she had been a blessing for her parents. She brought home A+ grades in her report cards and she did everything that her parents would ask for with no excuses. Mom told us her feelings, “Maligaya ako na napagsisilbihan ko sila”, I’m happy that I was able to serve them. All her children know how much she loved her family, all the birthdays and all the death anniversaries of her parents, brother and sisters, plus her own deceased children she remembered and celebrated them by cooking “pancit,” and she did the same with us, her living children. Mom loved sports, she was a good catcher in softball in elementary and ran fast in 100 meter dash in high school. Until in her late 80’s, she did try to stay healthy by doing calesthenic exercises, even in bed. She was the youngest among her late brothers, Tio Pedro and Tio Delfin and sisters, Tia Soledad, Tia Narcisa, Tia Amparo and Tia Cleofelia. In my Mom’s high school life, she met her best friend Aunt Rosie who introduced her brother, Godofredo Sr. (our Dad) to my mom. From then on our dad never stopped chasing our mom, and you know what? Papang is a year ahead in high school. Papang stopped schooling for a year just to be in the same year in school with mamang. They both started going to the University of the Philippines before World War II. Even in the midst of World War II, where he even got incarcerated by his own Pilipino people thinking he was a “makapili” Japanese follower because of his chinky eyes, and that perseverance captured our mom’s heart. They got married and had 13 offspring of which 8 are still living and mourning for loosing our ever dearest mamang on November 22, 2010.
