

Maria Teresa Diaz was born on February 26, 1948 to Enrique Leon and Socorro Lopes in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Maria moved to Encinitas, California in the 1960’s and San Diego became her permanent home in the 1970’s. She was raised with six siblings, Luis Lopes, Laura Castañares, Enrique Leon, Juanita Leon, Felipa Leon, and Leonardo Leon.
Maria met and fell in love with Leonardo Diaz Sevilla and the couple happily exchanged wedding vows at Tijuana’s City Hall on October 9, 1967. Maria and Leonardo were blessed with 2 children. A daughter, Laura D. Counley and a son, Gary Diaz. Possessing strong ethics and values, Maria loved being a full time mother.
Maria was always happy and willing to help anyone in need. She was known to many as Mother Teresa because she cared for everyone and anyone. She was especially known for her distinguished laugh.
Maria left us on January 2, 2012 at the age of 63. She passed away in her daughter’s home in Puyallup, Washington of Lewy Body Dementia. She is survived by her husband, Leonardo Diaz, son, Gary Diaz and daughter, Laura D. Counley. Services were handled by Glen Abbey Mortuary. A Funeral Service was held at The Little Chapel of the Roses on January 12, 2012. Maria Teresa Diaz was laid to rest at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, California.
