MARIA SUSANA DAEN BUENO
Maria Susana Daen Bueno passed peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones after a short battle with cancer on July 18, 2021 in San Diego, CA
Susan was born on November 25, 1948 in Manila, Philippines to Manuel L. Daen and Francisca Reyes.
The middle daughter of a large family including her three sisters, Adela, Imelda, Dolores and two brothers, Edgardo and Manuel, Jr. Three older siblings, Rosie and two other infants died before she was born.
Her family calls Susan their “quiet strength” in spirit, generosity and humility.
Her dream for a life in American became a reality when they emigrated to the US in 1974. Susan joined the US Army and after with the City of San Diego Public Works as a Maintenance Supervisor. She retired in 2004 after 32 years of service.
She was a devout parishioner at St. Rita’s, St. Mary’s and St Michael’s Churches and a long-time generous benefactor to her family’s hometown chapel and religious project, Poong Nazareno, in Manito, Albay, Philippines
She was married to Gaspar Bueno who pre-deceased her. Although she had no children of her own, she was a second mother and grandmother to many especially as her siblings had children of their own.
Susan’s family was her love and life. Her definition of family was not blood, but those previous connections of the heart and life experiences lived-well. Her joyful personality was contagious to everyone she met. Susan loved and lived without desire for accolades or acknowledgment for the many big and small ways she helped others. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in the small things in life. This was most reflected in her daily tenderness, devotion and the joy to care for her aging parents until they passed away.
The family’s loss is deep and profound. Susan is survived by her siblings: Adela Delos Santos, Edgardo Daen, Manuel Daen, Jr and Dolores Daen 18 nieces and nephews and 30 grand-nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents and sister, Imelda Tumaneng.
