From an early age, she showed an affinity for fashion, language and beauty. Though from a modest family, Nietta always presented herself most fashionably and stylishly.
As she entered her teen years, she showed an aptitude for athletics and languages. She was an alternate to the 1944 Italian Olympic Team as a sprinter and hurdler (which came in handy later, as she chased her 5 sons around the neighborhood). While pursuing athletics, Nietta also strived toward her goal of becoming a language teacher of English and French.
After completing her teaching program she met and married an Englishman, moving to England and giving birth to her first son Ronald. After a short marriage, Nietta moved back to Italy, where she eventually was found by her life’s love. After a whirlwind courtship by 1957 Nietta and Bob were married and her 2nd son Steven was born late that same year. The following year, Bob’s military orders took them back to the U.S. (to the great state of Texas), where they took up residence in the Gulf Coast Town of Kingsville, where Nietta was pressed into service as a translator after a young Italian tourist was in a serious car accident. Then Nietta took her into their home until she was rehabilitated.
In 1959, her third son, Robert Jr. was born and the next year the navy moved Bob and Nietta to Alameda, CA.
With the move to California in 1960 they settled into the California lifestyle, which suited Nietta perfectly.
In November of 1961 they welcomed the birth of their 4th child, David. Now with 4 boys and an upcoming move to San Diego most women would be too busy taking on anything else. However Nietta found time in 1962 to start selling Beauty Counselor make-up products.
In 1962 with orders to San Diego Nietta found herself quite busy raising her 4 boys and cultivating her beauty counseling business for the next 5 years and in 1967 came the birth of her 5th son Tony.
With the purchase of a new home in Chula Vista and the fifth son on the scene, Nietta still kept up on the latest fashions and in 1969 was voted Best Dressed in the South Bay Social Circle. The next several years were filled with running her boys from baseball to football and basketball practices and then with Tony she achieved her soccer mom status.
With her boys now all in school and with some extra time on her hands, she began to pursue her other passion of interior design in 1975. While working full-time as an interior designer, Nietta still had more to contribute to the local community, so she began writing a fashion column for “The Bonita Post”. A column that she would continue to write until she undertook her next endeavor starting her own interior design studio, “Bonita Interiors, by Nietta”, in 1981.
The next dozen years saw all of Nietta’s sons leave for college and the military to start their own lives and families.
In 1995, she closed the business and took on full-time “retirement” and for those who knew her, this really meant for Nietta to start indulging more of her passions; gardening, community work, social clubs, and most importantly Grandmothering!
She remained an active member of “Sweetwater Woman’s Club”, until her untimely passing. Nietta’s club members, friends and her family will miss her greatly. Her passing leaves an epic void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
