

San Diego — Severiano Espinosa Basa, 90, peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Chula Vista California.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Helena (Maggay) Basa; his eight children, Eleanore, Albert, Errol, Exor, Susan, William, Claire, Karen; 13 grandchildren; and many close family and friends.
Born and raised in the Philippines, the son of Paulino and Maria (Espinosa) Basa, he was a lifelong resident of Union City California.
In his early years, Mr. Basa enlisted the United States Navy and enjoyed his numerous duties and assignments to wherever the Navy needed him. He served during the conflict in Vietnam and Korean War. His accolades include World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Service Medal. He is particularly proud of his five year submarine duty as he tells these stories of wonderful adventures. Mr. Basa was also nicknamed “Rocky” as he also was an avid boxer while he was in the Navy. He met his wife, Helena Maggay, during his shore duty in Subic Naval Base Philippines where they later married in Olongapo City, Philippines in 1950.
After his 26 years of honorable service in the US Navy, Mr. Basa had the opportunity to go back to school and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Araneta University Manila, Philippines. He was a proud owner of numerous businesses in the Philippines. He loved catering for all military service members that visits Subic Base, Olongapo City. He not only took pride in his business, but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business. Over the years, his business management expertise and reputation led his businesses to be frequented by service members. Mr. Basa also had a passion for horse racing that became is hobby during his time off from work. Although his true passion and his unending commitment to the Navy led him to mentor numerous Filipino recruits which ensured their success in transitioning to the military life style.
A loving husband, a wonderful Papa, an outstanding friend, mentor, and a true sailor.

A funeral service will be held on July 14-15 from Glen Abbey Funeral Home of Bonita, with a full military honors burial on July 16 at Miramar National Cemetery.
