On June 06, 2023, Symfini Alexis Martin, 18, of San Diego, CA, passed away peacefully at home with her beloved mother Nenita Canete at her side. Early that morning, the clouds lifted and the Aurora Borealis ushered her to heaven.
Symfini was a child born with little oxygen going through her brain for the first 3-5 minutes of her life. She never learned how to crawl, turn, or stand on her feet like other newborns did. At seven months old she started having seizures. She was then diagnosed with having cerebral palsy.
Her medical issues continued as she grew older and eventually got so serious, the medical community predicted she would not live past her 11th birthday. Symfini had a beautiful soul. She had a will to live that vastly exceeded the expectations of experts. She required on-site medical attention on a 24-hour, seven day a week basis for the rest of her life.
Symfini lived with her mother her entire life. Through the love, care, and concern for her well-being from Symfini’s mother, Nenita, and the help from her primary nursing providers Minerva Llanes, who has cared for her for 15 years, and Kathy Johnson, who worked the night shift caring for her for five years, they monitored and maintained her life support system so thoroughly, she lived well beyond expectations.
Despite the fact that Symfini was also born blind due to brain trauma, and pulmonary issues, and had severely limited mental capacity, her angels of mercy made her smile every day. She was well aware of the voices of the people watching over her. She reciprocated her acknowledgement of these people with her beautiful smile.
Symfini is survived by her mother Nenita Canete, her father Dwayne Martin, three brothers, Devvion Dogans, Brandon Dogans, and Geno Dogans. Additionally, Symfini is survived by one stepbrother, Brandon Martin, and two stepsisters, Amanda Martin and Ariana Martin.
Although Symfini’s ultimate arising is heartbreaking for those she left behind, God has now chosen to ease her suffering and called her home to rest beside him through eternity.
God bless Symfini and the surviving members of her family.
