Virgilio Cuevas Bumbasi, also known as, Vi, was born on Feb. 15, 1941 in Imus, Cavite, Philippines to parents, Bernardo Arciaga Bumbasi and Marcela Cuevas Bumbasi and later raised by Anacleta Fabio Bumbasi. He is the second oldest of ten siblings – Rafael, Zosimo (deceased), Fernando, Eufrocina, Flaviana, Pilar, Emiterio, Sonia and Maximo. He attended grade school at Imus Pilot Elementary School and high school at Imus Institute in Imus, Cavite (Class of 1960). He was an active participant of PMT (Philippine Military Training), where he became a Company Commander.
Four years after high school, in June 1964, he joined the US Navy with Rhode Island as his first duty station. After 10 years of being in the service, he returned to the Philippines where he met his wife-to-be Emilia Salazar Varias, an Elementary School Teacher at Jesus Good Shepherd School in Imus, Cavite. They married on April 27, 1975. Two years later, they were blessed with their first child, Brian, born in 1977. In 1980, they welcomed a daughter, EmmyLynn. Both of their children are now married and raising their own families. Brian is married to Pamela and they have two sons, Jonah Blade (4 years old) and Nate Bolo (13 months old). EmmyLynn is married to Trac and they have two daughters, Emmalani (5 years old) and MaiLynn (3 years old). He loved his grandkids very much that he practically gave them everything they wanted. They are his pride & joy.
As mentioned earlier, he joined the US Navy in June 1964 and retired First Class (E6 ) in March 1985. He was awarded the following: Fourth Good Conduct Award - Mar.’83, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon(Third), Humanitarian Service Medal (Second Award) & Navy Expeditionary Medal.
His last duty station was at BRCOMSTR NASNI, San Diego 92135. He had attended training in: Food Sanitation Instructor Course, March’79, Management Principles Sept. ’80 and Forklift Driving School in Nov. ’82. After retiring from the Navy in 1985, he continued to work at Branch Commissary in North Island as “Produce Specialist” from Dec. 1985 to July 2002. He retired as a Federal Employee in 2002.
After retiring from the Commissary, he worked as a Security Guard at the Coronado Cays from 2003 to 2005 and at Able Patrol & Guard from July 2006 to Oct 3, 2014, where he earned the titles of Employee of the Month, Employee of the Quarter and Employee of the Year in 2007.
He was also Brother Mason affiliated with Silver Gate Three Stars Lodge #296 F. & A.M. In his spare time, Vi would frequently travel back to the Philippines where he enjoyed spending time with family & friends, and occasionally partaking in his favorite hobby, “sabong.” Upon returning home, he would spend his time hanging out with his friends, known as, “The Breakfast Club,” or enjoying the company of his 4 grandchildren.
Vi will always be remembered for being a great husband, the best dad, the coolest uncle, an awesome brother, and the most loving, caring, and generous "Lolo."
