The  Gibbs  family  will always  remember  Jerry  and John  coaching  together  for so many years.  RIP.  

For nearly 3 years as a Eucharistic minister for St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Chula Vista I took communion weekly to Jerry's wife Andrea during her illness.  We had been tennis friends and she was struggling with cancer treatments.  During this week end visit I saw Jerry a few times and he would grunt a 'hello' in his 'famous' manner. Some time after Andrea was gone I heard Jerry had suffered a stroke so I stopped by to say 'Hello'. 
 That visit became a weekend visit delivering the free local newspaper for nearly 4 years! He had mentioned that with neuropathy of the legs and then the stroke issues that it was difficult to park the car, fight the curb with his walker and pick up a paper.  I told I could get it for him as the paper's office is just a few doors down from my son's and my office in Chula Vista.  

When I'd stop by he always wanted me to 'get a chair and visit a bit' sitting there in his garage in his lazy boy chair where he spent a lot of his time. 

 The last time I saw him he was in bed and as ill as he was from the recent heart attack was smiling and laughing about a prior time when he phoned for help with something and like a teenager kept responding to me with 'Yes, Mother, OK Mother!' .....

After that conversation Michael, Susan and I prayed the Our Father with him - and of all our visits I will remember that visit----our short weekly visits for nearly 4 years are finished--
When others couldn't understand why I visited Jerry, I'd just say that is what  Christians are supposed to do---

Andrea was my best friend for about 40 years, enabling me to know Jerry, well, and have many memories.  Jerry was a complex man with a soft heart, but he kept it hidden with his bluster and harsh voice.  The memory that stands out, demonstrating what he kept hidden, is the time he spent teaching our son, John, then 4, to play soccer.  After Clifford left to join the ship in WESTPAC, Jerry began to take John with him to every one of Michael’s soccer team practices, and all the Saturday games. He blustered away my thanks.  Another time, I discovered him spraying our yard for ants, but he brushed away my appreciation, telling me, he was doing his yard, anyway.  I’ll always remember all the hours, he spent working with children and youth.  Jerry worked so hard to keep his heart hidden.  He always reminded me of a song about being carefully taught.  Sadly, he never was taught to let anyone see what he had inside.  I will cherish  all the good memories.

Michael and Family,
I am so very sorry about the passing of your father. This tribute with all the memories, stories and photos is a beautiful testament to a man who made a difference with his life.
Please accept my deepest condolences during this difficult time.

My deepest, most heartfelt condolences to the Jeremiah Family. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this time!

I had the distinct pleasure of playing for Coach Jeremiah while attending Marian Catholic High School from 1994-1998 and was his goalie on those teams.  

Interestingly enough, one of my fondest memories of Coach Jeremiah was nowhere near the soccer field, but on the 5 freeway near La Jolla Village Drive. We were stuck in traffic and in the midst of being late for our soccer match against La Jolla Country Day. With every passing minute Coach was getting more anxious and irritated with the 11 or so players in his Chevy Suburban when all of  a sudden a foreign exchange player on the team from Japan started yelling at the top of his lungs... COACH, COACH, DISNEYLAND, DISNEYLAND as he stared at the Mormon Temple in La Jolla while banging at the backside window of his Chevy Suburban. I must say Coach's reaction was one for the ages (POOR TAKAFUMI). 

Aside from my freshman year our teams weren't great but Coach was always optimistic. One day before we took the field against Coronado HS for a home game he had the brilliant idea to start the game with 12 players on the field. I must say that didn't fare too well with the referees. 

RIP Coach. Thank you for the memories.

This was a lovely service for Jerry. I'm glad that I was able to watch. Jerry was a classmate, CHS '62.

Susan and Michael, 

I want to let you know how sorry I am about your Dad’s passing! He and especially your Awesome Mom were both very good to me! They opened up  (your) their home to me,  and trusted me more than I could ever have imagined!

Being at your house almost every day, be it hosing down the driveway, mowing the lawn... PICKING FRUIT 😋😂 !! Hanging out or running errands  just to name a few things, and frequently being asked to stay for dinner definitely made me feel like part of your family! 

I remember when you two were only juniors in high school and your parents had to go away on a business trip,I can’t remember where , maybe Hawaii? They asked me to stay with you for the week , talk about trust! We had a good time, you two were  model children, and your parents would definitely have been proud of you as I’m sure they were! 

Susan, I told you two weeks ago when you called to tell of your dad’s passing I feel fortunate because I knew  your dad really liked me and he didn’t openly show how much he really liked people. I was one of the lucky ones! It was tough for someone to gain his approval.  

Michael, I shared the same story with you as well when we spoke last week! I just want to let you both know that your dad and I spoke often,  and I can honestly say that he really loved all of you very much! 

Rest assured that he and your mom are finally back together for all eternity! 

I was a classmate of Jerry's at Cohasset High School, Class of 1962.  He was a wonderful addition to any class, always kind, always good-humored, always ready to listen.  I send my condolences to his family and friends.

Susan and Michael, 

Your dad and I were the best of friends at Cohasset High School, doing just about everything together, including but not limited to playing varsity football, double dating, partying with our classmates( drinking) and sneaking cigarettes. 

Over the years I often kidded him that if it weren't for me, he wouldn't have been our quarterback. I wanted to play both offense and defense and, our coach, Mr. Dorr said I could, but not at quarterback. Your dad and I were about the same at that position,  so he played QB and was instrumental in leading our team to the league championship our junior year. We had a great team.

Indeed he loved to coach baseball but ran track in the spring, so I told him (kiddingly) he had no business coaching that sport because he didn't know anything about it. Apparently, I was wrong.

I felt blessed to have had lunch with him in San Diego about fifteen months ago, and shared a lot of memories.

Jerry had a good sense of values which served him well over the years. He was a good friend.

My deepest condolences to you and to Rick, Phyliss, Renee, and Diane.

Jerry and John Gibbs were a great friends. Coaching baseball was a blast for both of them and they sat for hours in Jerry's office talking about who knows what? Continue to think about the smiles and the laughs and now they are both resting in peace.

Prayer for Jerry and all his family:

Lord God, by the strength of your own arm you have won for us final victory over the power of sin and death:  We give you thanks for your servant Jerry who served as a Naval Aviator in the armed forces of our nation, giving of his life for the defense of liberty and the preservation of freedom.  Grant to him a place of eternal rest and peace in your eternal dwelling place, that with all the heavenly host, the noble army of martyrs, and all the powers of heaven he may praise your great and glorious Name unto the ages of ages. I’ll always remember Mr. Jeremiah as he was my first soccer coach and also a softball coach for many years.  Our entire family was blessed to have him in our lives and he was such a beloved friend to my dad.  He’s now in heaven with dear Mrs. Jeremiah and I’m sure he and my dad are talking endlessly about baseball!

One of my oldest memories is when you were 10 and I was 7. In about late 1954, you and I walked from the Officers Quarters where we lived on the Naval Base in Bremerton, WA up the hill to the base theater near the Navy Exchange. (Kids could do things like this back then.)

We saw a movie called “Men of the Fighting Lady” about a Navy flight squadron aboard an aircraft carrier during the Korean War.

After the movie, we stood outside the theater next to a big red Coca-Cola machine. We each put in a nickel then stood and drank our Coke from a small green glass bottle. I turned to you and said, “Billy, I am going to be a Naval Aviator!”

So, my objective for going to military school, to college and then to Navy Flight School was to become a Navy pilot.

Although you never expressed the same goal while we were growing up, when you were commissioned from the US Naval Academy, off you went to Pensacola. So, you got your wings of gold before I did.

Although we were in different squadrons and flew different aircraft, we each served proudly during Vietnam. We even had occasion to fly together.

Our deep belief in this great nation and the principles in Naval Aviation of Honor, Trust and Loyalty solidified a bond of brothers that never waivered and has always been with us.

In the words of John Gillespie Magee’s “High Flight”, you have now  “…slipped the surly bonds of earth….and touched the face of God”.

So I wish you fair winds and following seas with tail winds and CAVU skies….

My Brother Jerry:

You will be missed. Though you didn’t always show it, you had a good heart. One would just have to look past the “grumpiness” at times. I’m glad we  got to spend time together as we got older. Traveling to the east coast with Michael and Rick was definitely an adventure that turned out to be very special. There are many mores memories that will be with us all forever.

As your brother for 74 years, I have known you longer than anyone has :-)

Your guiding principles have always been Honor, Trust, Integrity and Loyalty. You have always held love of country above all.

At Cohasset High School, you were an active leader, class president and an athlete, playing basketball and you were quarterback and captain of the football team.

Excelling academically and in athletics, you had four adventurous years as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. Upon receiving your commission, you went to flight school and earned your wings as a Naval Aviator. You served honorably as an ASW pilot during the Vietnam War.
 
After several successful years in business, you established Academy Partners as your own company.

You were always a very good provider for you family, Andrea, Michael and Susan.

You took great pride and joy as “Coach” with true love of the game for many boys’ and girls’ baseball and soccer teams. All the trophies and photos are a testament to that.

Although we have not resided in the same place for nearly 60 years, the bond of our personal relationship has never been broken during all of the highs, the lows and the experiences of our respective lives. Fortunately, I was usually able to visit you at least several times a year, until COVID that is. At times we would only talk every couple weeks or so, but for the past couple years we would often talk almost daily. Now I miss those chats :-(

In these later years, you have handled the disabling challenges of peripheral neuropathy with dignity. You peacefully left us on January 14.

May you enjoy Peace in your new journey…. This Bud’s for you!

Jerry and John Gibbs were my first baseball coaches at Sweetwater Valley Little League. They had a passion for the game and encouraged us to play hard and enjoy the game.  Thanks for teaching me to play baseball.

You will be missed.

My name is Valentin & I did landscaping for Jeremiah for 3 years. Jeremiah was a special person. He liked to have everything perfect. The most important thing to him was his dog, I’d help take care of the dog and brush him. On Friday’s, after four o’clock, he would finish work and we would meet up to drink beers in his garage. He was the nicest nice guy and always good to me. On thanksgiving I brought him a plate of turkey, mashed potatoes, and half a pumpkin pie. He was so happy to have his “Thanksgiving” meal. I would always stop by to check in on him and he was always happy I did. I appreciate everything he did for me, I miss him already. I hope to see him again one day. Thank you Jeremiah for the job. See you one day again. 

Condolences to the family.  Jerry and I met on a baseball diamond and shared a dugout for many years.  I have fond memories of our friendship over the past 28 years.
Rest in peace.
