He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Known as “Johnny” to his wife, family, and close friends, he devoted more than 40 years to a meaningful career in education. Over the span of his professional life, he served as a science teacher and guidance counselor in Marysville, Ohio; a high school assistant principal; the middle school principal in Stow, Ohio; and later as superintendent of both Rittman Schools and Green Local Schools. He concluded his distinguished career as the Director of Graduate Studies for Ashland University’s satellite program in Massillon, Ohio. Johnny earned his Doctorate from Kent State University.
Before his career in education, Johnny played football in high school and received a full scholarship to play at Bowling Green University. Johnny proudly served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Captain.
Johnny had a deep love for adventure. He enjoyed traveling, scuba diving, skiing, and especially treasured his 50-year tradition of visiting Kelley’s Island once a year with “the boys.” He remained a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns throughout his life.
Johnny leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Cheryl; daughters Debbi Meade (Ron) and Tecca Wright (Ashley); granddaughter Ava; grandson Jacob Haschak; and daughter-in-law Monica Haschak. He was preceded in death by his son, Kirk, in 2020. He will be deeply missed by Cheryl, the love of his life, and by everyone who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date to take place in Ohio. More detail will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Green Schools Foundation (https://www.greenschoolsfoundation.org/) or the Alzheimer's Support Network in Naples, FL (https://support.network/) in Johnny’s memory.
