Hodges Life Celebration Center

It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we announce the passing of Melody Pence Svagdis, a woman whose bold spirit and vibrant presence touched the lives of all who knew her.

Born December 11, 1968, Melody left this world on November 8, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, joy, and unforgettable charm. To meet Melody was to know Melody. She was a woman who commanded attention—not in an imposing way, but through the sheer force of her vivacity, warmth, and generosity. With her beautiful hair and her signature red lips, she was a striking presence wherever she went, always radiating confidence and grace. But it was her smile—always world-class, always genuine—that people will remember most. It could light up a room and make even the hardest of days feel a little brighter.

Raised in Overland Park, Melody held her Kansas roots close to her heart. She was a proud graduate of Shawnee Mission South and the University of Kansas. After leaving Kansas, she embraced life in California for over 20 years, finding joy in service at Messiah Lutheran Church in Danville, where her kindness touched many.

A devoted mother to her gifted daughter, Nicole, who was the light of her life. Melody poured her love, quirky wisdom, and nurturing spirit into raising Nicole, cherishing every moment of their time together. She found great joy in opening their home to host Nicole’s volleyball team dinners. Melody was a proud mother, always present, always supportive, and always encouraging Nicole to reach for the stars.

Melody adored the finer things in life—wandering through the charming town of Danville, hours of conversation in the hot tub with Kevin, or sharing a moment of laughter with friends and family. She unabashedly practiced her philosophy of “fashion over function”. She knew how to savor life’s blessings and made the most of every opportunity.

Above all, Melody was a surrendered child of God, her faith an integral part of her character. She lived with a sense of peace and purpose, trusting in God’s plan. Melody left this world with immense gratitude and adoring love for the unwavering and selfless care of her devoted husband, Kevin, who stood by her side through the long, difficult years of a life shortened by the cruel toll of dementia.

Even amidst her struggles, Melody found ways to connect with and brighten the life of her dedicated caregiver, Laurie Cannon, whose love and compassion meant so much to her. Laurie and Kevin were inspired by Melody’s grace and courage through every challenge.

Though she is no longer with us, Melody’s legacy of love, strength, and beauty will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a force of nature, a fabulous friend, a devoted mother, a loving wife, a treasured sister, and a light in this world. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Ginger Pence. She is survived by her husband, Kevin, her daughter Nicole, her sister Merrole, brother-in-law Paul, step daughter Amanda and family, niece Hilary and family, nephew Jon and family, and Nicole’s father, Tim Norton.

We will miss her more than words can express, but we find comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to shine through all who loved her.

Rest in peace, Melody. You were, and always will be, unforgettable.
