He was born on September 30, 1941, in McPherson, Kansas, to Willard and Maxine Hull. Steve graduated from Pratt High School in Kansas in 1959. As a young adult, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Steve spent most of his life in the Dayton, Ohio area before becoming a full-time resident of Estero, Florida, in 2019. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1963 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.
After college, he began his career in Colorado, working in Inventory Control for General Motors. He transferred first to Atlanta, then to Dayton, and ultimately retired from GM after a long career as an Accounting Manager.
Steve had a dry sense of humor and loved to share things that he found funny or curious. He was detail-oriented and often pondered or theorized about things that others might overlook. He inherited a green thumb from his father, cultivating a large and plentiful garden and compost for many years. The yard of every house he lived in was meticulously cared for and beautifully adorned with flower beds and shrubbery. He loved being outdoors in the sun, and when he wasn't working in his yard, he could often be found shirtless, soaking up the rays.
Steve had a lifelong interest in wildlife. Just days before his passing, he recorded a video of a mother bobcat and her trio of kittens strolling past his condo lanai.
When getting together with friends or family, Steve enjoyed celebrating happy hour with a cocktail or a glass of red wine. It was a time to relax and play games like cribbage or Euchre.
Steve was a skilled strategist and athlete, and it was nearly impossible to beat him at any game or sport. His competitive nature was most evident on the tennis court, where he was an amateur champion, with his name engraved on countless plaques and trophies. In high school, he was the Kansas state A-B division tennis champion in singles (1959) and doubles (1958 and 1959). He also won the singles title twice in the Montgomery County Tennis Open for those 45 and over. In 2006, his USTA team was crowned Midwest Section Super Senior Champions and went on to Nationals. Tennis was undoubtedly his greatest passion, although he was also skilled at basketball and golf. He rode his bicycle regularly and prioritized staying fit and active.
Steve was hard-working and disciplined, but also fun-loving and adventurous. It was widely assumed that he would outlive his family and friends due to his physical strength and energetic spirit. His laughter, wisdom, reliability, and companionship will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
Steve is survived by his loving and devoted wife Joyce of 33 years; daughters Stephanie (Jack) Hull, Diana (Eric) Hull; granddaughter EV (Chris) Kuzma; great-grandchildren Cooper, Brady, and Charlotte Kuzma; brother Kenneth (Anne) Hull; and ex-wife Martha Williams.
