

Born in 1942 in upstate New York, Neil lived in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from MIT in 1964, he worked at Massachusetts General Hospital where he co-created MUMPS, a healthcare-specific programming language which helped jumpstart the independent healthcare software industry. In 1969, he launched MEDITECH (Medical Information Technology, Inc.), the first software company focused on the healthcare sector. As a pioneer in his industry, he steered the company for 57 years, serving as Chairman until his passing. A dedicated philanthropist, Neil and his wife support many educational and cultural institutions.
Neil is survived by his wife Jane and their four children and spouses: Michael Pappalardo and wife Didi, Sheila Lemke and husband Todd, B.J. Daniel and wife Meg, and Melissa Frost and husband Chris; and his 13 cherished grandchildren: Maggie, Doc, Atticus, Maximilian (Skylar), Aymara, Basil, Che, Lucy, Wilder, Declan, Finnea, Arwen, and Esme and their loving partners. He leaves behind a sister-in-law, Marlene Pappalardo, two brothers-in-law, Paul Langevin and Naylon Leapley, and multiple nieces and nephews. Neil was predeceased by his brother P. Frank Pappalardo and his parents Fauna (Prinzivalli) and Frank D. Pappalardo.
A private family service will be held to honor Neil’s life. The family appreciates your thoughts at this time. Those wishing to honor Neil’s memory may make a donation to Community Servings, a local food service organization for people living with critical or chronic illnesses and food insecurity.
